COMBINED BEAM-CLAMP AND PIPE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,887, dated August 29, 1899. Application filed February 24, 1897. Serial No. 624,756. (No model.)
I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Beam-Clamp and Pipe-Hanger; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in beam-clamps and attached pipe-hangers; and
it consists of certain details of construction, all of which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved clamp shown in engagement with the lower web of an I-beam. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the I-beam and the front twin jaw omitted. Fig. 3 is a central vertical transverse section of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the pipe-hanger and attached pipe-holding device, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 are the ,twin jaws of the beam-clamp, having the flat elongated shanks 3 and 4, provided with the central elongated slots 5 and 6. The holder 7 is provided at its upper end with the short shoulders 8 8 on opposite sides thereof, and below these are the long shoulders 9 9, also on-opposite sides. These shoulders 8 8 and 9 9 form ways on opposite sides of the holder 7 for the adjustable reception of the slotted shanks 3 and i of the twin jaws.
10 is an aperture in the holder 7 for the reception of the bolt 11, which also passes through the elongated slots 5 and 6 in the shanks of the twin jaws. A nut 12 on the bolt 11 is employed to tighten the shanks 3 and 4 on the holder, the washer 13 being interposed between the nut 12 and shank 4.
Fig. 1 illustrates the manner of securing the clamp to the web of the I-beam, the jaws being slid in their shouldered ways to or from 50- each other to adapt them for engagement with I-beams of varying widths. In this manner the pipe-hanger, which is suspended from the nut 14:, (see Fig. 1,) can always occupy a central position for any adjustment of the twin jaws. The extended bearings formed by the long lower shoulders 9 9 give to the twin jaws the suflicient rigidity desired.
In Figs. i and 5 is shown my improved pipe-hanger, which is removably secured to the nut 14.- on the holder 7. The verticallychanneled bracket 15 is provided at its upper end with the square chamber 16, open on its under side. The screw-threaded lower end of the clamp-holder 7 is passed down through an aperture in the upper wall of the chamber 16, and the nut 14 is engaged therewith and rests within the chamber l6,as shown in dotted lines. In this manner the beam-clamp is removably secured to the pipe-hanger. The lower end of the bracket 15 has the wings 17 17, across which is secured a pin 18. Between these wings is placed a keeper 19, having an inclined elongated slot 20, through which the pin 18 passes. The inner face of the keeper 19 is provided with the horizontal notches 21.
22 is a notched rod which is adjustable vertically in the channeled bracket 15 and held in any predetermined position by engagement with the notched keeper 19. The action of the pin 18 and inclined slot 20 serves under downward pressure or strain to wedge the notched keeper against the notched rod 22, thus holding it firmly in position. To release the rod 22 for a different vertical adjustment, the notched keeper is pushed up, its inclined slot serving to throw it out of engagement with the rod 22. A retrograde downward movement serves to again lock the notched rod as before. The device for securing the pipe to be suspended by the hanger is arranged as follows:
To the lower end of the notched rod 22 and integral therewith is the semicircular arm 23, its lower end being cut away on its upper side and provided with the slot 24:. Another semicircular arm 25 is provided with an elongated slot 26, adapted for the loose reception of a pin 27 on the arm 23, the protruding end of the pin 27 being upset against a washer to hold the arms 23 and 25 together. The lower end of the arm 25 is cut away on its under side, so as to register with the cutaway end of the other arm 23, as shown in section in Fig. 4, and is provided with the hook 28, which enters the slot 24 in the arm 23 and engages with a shoulder 29, adjacent to the slot 24. This hook 28 prevents the arms 23 and 25 from separating after they are secured around a pipe, the weight of the pipe securely locking the same. The slot 26 permits the arms to be separated to remove the pipe.
I claim- 1. A beam-clamp for pipe-hangers consisting of twin jaws having horizontally-slotted shanks a holder provided with ways in which the shanks of the jaw-clamps are horizontally adjustable and means for rigidly securing the twin jaws in any of their adjusted positions in the ways of the holder.
2. A beam-clamp for pipe-hangers consisting of twin jaws having horizontally-slotted shanks, a holder provided with shouldered Ways on opposite sides thereof, in which the shanks of the jaw-clam ps are horizontally adjustable and means for rigidly securing the twin jaws in any of their adjusted positions in the shouldered ways of the holder.
3. A pipe-hanger consisting of a verticallychanneled bracket having side wings at its lower end, a notched keeper having an inclined elongated slot a pin secured between the wings and adapted for sliding engagement with the inclined elongated slot of the notched keeper, a notched rod for carrying the pipe, vertically adjustable in the channeled bracket and held in any desired position by removable engagement with the notched keeper, a clip for holding the pipe and a support attachable to the beam for carrying the hanger. The combination with a vertically-channeled bracket, a notched rod and means for adjustably holding the notched rod in the vertically-channeled bracket, of the arm 23 rigid with the notched rod and provided with the pin 27, slot 24 and adjacent shoulder 29 and the loose arm 25 provided with the slot 26 adapted for the loose reception of the pin 27, and the hook 28 adapted for removable insertion Within the slot'24 of the arm 23 and engagement within the shoulder 29 also upon the arm 23 substantially as and for the purpose stated.
