UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IsAAc KEY, on LEACI'I, INDIANA.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 631,723, dated August 22, 1899.
Application filed November 14, 1898. Serial No. 696,480. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ISAAC KEY, acitzen of the United States, residing at Leach, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in churns of that class which may be termed vibrating, the same comprising a stationary body or receptacle and a single-handled dasher.
It has for its object, among other things, to greatly simplify the construction and ar- -rangement of the part-s and denude the same of all unnecessary appendages, also to expedite and facilitate the churning operation and to readily draw off the buttermilk.
It consists of the detailed construction, combination, and disposition of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically point-ed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure'l is a plan view of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof.
A refers to the cream-receptacle or body, of keg-like or substantially cylindric shape. The receptacle or body A is suitably supported upon legs ct a, secured to its ends or sides, as preferred, and has an opening b in its upper side, thro'ugh which the cream is inserted and the butter or contents are removed, suitably boxed or walled around, as at h', said boxing or walling rabbeted in its upper edge, as at b2, to provide for sinking the cover or lid B therein below or flush with its top edge.
The cover or lid B is made in sections B B2, each having a suitable knob or handhold for its removal and held in place by suitable fastenings or buttons b3, swiveled or pivoted upon the top edge of the wall or boxing b'. The lid or top section B" has one edge-'that immediately adjoining the meeting edge of the lid or cover section Bz-provided with a lateral recess or cut away, as at b4, and in this recess is arranged atrunnion or pivot b5, with one end fixed to the same lid-section B', having said recess and extending to the oppositevlid or cover section.
C is the dasher, preferably of the construction shown, which maybe either foraminous or imperforated to suitably and effectively act upon the cream for its conversion into butter with facility and the minimum timein two or three minutes. The dasher C has a stem or staff C' arranged in vertical alinement therewith, which when grasped by the hand and actuated will cause the dasher to act upon the cream and. throw the butter against the sides and respective ends of the receptacle, eectively performing the churning operation. The staff or stem C is pro vided a short distance above its blade with an apertured circular portion c to permit said stem 0r staff to be laterally slipped upon the pivot b5 of the lid or cover, and consequently the pivoting or fulcru ming of the lever thereon directlyfin said lid or cover itself, thus in addition to simplifying construction providing for thel conjoint and simultaneous insertion in place in the receptacle of the cover and dasher and the like removal of said parts therefrom when it is desired to remove the contents of the receptacle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is n 1. The churn comprising the receptacle, having the opening therein through which the contents &c. are removed provided around its edges with a surrounding boxing or flange, the lid or cover in two parts or sections, iuclosed by said boxing or iiange, one lid or cover section having a lateral recess or opening, and a pivot-pin extending from one edge of said opening or recess transversely or crosswise of said opening and the other lid, or cover, section closing one side of said opening or recess and abutting or guarding the free end of said pivot-pin, and the dasher having its stem or staff provided with -an apertured circular bearing, kadapted to receive said pivot-pin, and having its axial line parallel with and in vertical alinement with the lateral area or width of said dasher, substan tially as set forth.

Said recess and its free end extendinfr to and y T guarded by the meeting edge of the oiher 1id- ISAAC REX section, and the dasher having its stal or /Vtnesses:
