UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ROWE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
APPARATUS FOR MELTING GLUE.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent NO. 631,327, dated August 22, 1899i Application filed Marcil 21, 1899. Serial NO- 709,897 (No mOdel.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ROWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Melting Glue; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel apparatus for melting glue, glue compositions, and similar substances, the object beingv to provide a device of this character in which the glue can be readily melted without the addition of an undesirable quantity of water, so that it can be readily used for the manufacture of printers rollers; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating an apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention, Figure l is a transverse sectional view of same on the line l l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
In melting glue or similar substances preparatory to using it in the manufacture of printers rollers and other purposes it is essential that the minimum quantity of water be added thereto, as if the percentage of moisture is only slightly too great it cannot be successfully used for this purpose. To this end it is customary to melt such glue by placing itin a closed receptacle and admitting steam to the latter, whereby the glue is melted and :only a very small percentage of moisture added. In order to successfully meltsaid glue to a uniform condition, it is necessary that it be divided into small pieces, so that the steam can readily act thereon and f melt it more rapidly than would be possible come this and other objections, I have designed my apparatus to agitate the glue and keep it in constant motion ,in the presence of steam, whereby each piece will be acted upon uniformly and packing will be entirely prevented, thus saving time and likewise avoidj ing the addition of a superfluous amount of mounted thereon and consisting of the annularly-lianged end plates F, in which the ends of a Wire-cloth cylinder G are secured. Said cylinder G is provided with a gate H, through which the glue is introduced and which is then closed and locked by means of the latch I. At one of its projecting ends said shaft C carries a pulley J, by means of which said shaft and cylinder are revolved. As said bearings D are located below the lower edge of the cover B and must be preferably7 made removable, together with the cylinder G, I have provided vertical slots in the end plates of the casing A, extending from lthe upper edge thereof to said bearings, said slots being adapted to be closed by means of plates K, having side grooves adapted to receive the edges o f said end plates. Said plates K are provided at their lower ends with semicircular recesses to receive the shaft C. On the interior of the said casing A, in the lower portion thereof, I form steam-boxes L by means of securing plates M therein, said plates being of irregular shape in cross-section and secured at their upper and lower edges to the inner face of said casing A, their general formation being such that a space is left between the same and said casing to form said steam-boxes L. Steam is admitted to said boxes through the pipes N and liows thence into said casing A through the longitudinal slots O in said plates M, iianges I being provided adjacent said slots to cause the steam passing through the same to impinge against the cylinder G. A pipe Q, leading from the cover B, affords an outlet for the steam after passing through the cylinder G. The molten glue drips from said cylinder G upon the lower inclined por- IOO tions of the plates M and iows out through the pipe R, leading from the bottom of said casing A. To prevent water from condensed steam from mixing with the molten glue, I have provided troughs S, mounted on said plates M above said slots O and extending the entire length of the casing A. The said troughs S are adapted to collect the condensations forming in the upper portions of said casing and lead the same to pipes T, ventering said casing A at one end, said pipes 'l being preferably brought together at their ends and connected with a waste-pipe U.
I claim as my inventionl. A device for melting glue comprising a casing havinga removable cover, a perforated cylinder revolubly and removably mounted in said casing and adapted to receive lumps of glue, means for revolving said cylinder, steam-boxes in said casing, slots connecting said steam-boxes with the interior of said casing, said slots being so directed as to cause the steam to enter said casing in sheets practically radial with said revoluble cylinder, steam-inlets in said boxes, asteam-outlet from said casing, and an outlet for molten glue.
i. A device for melting glue comprising a casinghavinga removable cover, aperforated cylinder revolubly and removably mounted in said casing and adapted to receive lumps of glue, means for revolving said cylinder, steam-boxes in said casing, slots connecting said steam-boxes with the interior of said casing, troughs interiorly mounted in said casing above said slots and adapted to collect water from condensed steam, a waste-pipe connected with said troughs, steam-inlets in said steam-boxes,asteam-outlet from said casing, and an outlet for molten glue.
3. A device for melting glue comprising a casing having a removable cover, a perforated cylinder revolubly and removably mounted in said casing, and adapted to receive lumps of glue, means for revolving said cylinder, steam-boxes in said casing` slots connecting said steam-boxes with the interior of said casing, said slots being so formed as to cause steam issuing therefrom to impinge against said cylinder, troughs interiorly mounted in said casing above said slots and adapted to collect water from condensed steam, a wastepipe connected with said troughs, steam-in lets in said steam-boxes, a steam-outlet from said casing, and an outlet for molten glue.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
