HARNESS-SADDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,136, dated August 15, 1899.

Be it known that I, JAMES B. TENER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sabina, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gig-Brake Saddles for Harness, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to harness-saddles; and its primary object is to provide an improved construction of saddle which may be manufactured economically and which will be well adapted for the ready attachment thereto of the other parts of the harness which are supported by or connected to the saddle.

The characteristic features of theinvention will be fully described hereinafter and defined in the appended claims.

The accompanying drawing is a view in perspective of a harness-saddle embodying my invention, together with its attachments.

The reference-numeral l designates the saddle proper, provided with depending end extensions 2 and with projecting terrets 3, through which the reins pass. The ends 2 are each slitted longitudinally to form three parallel strips 4, 5, and 6. The central strips 4 constitute tongues, to the lower ends of which the shaft-loops 7 are secured, and the outer strips 5 and 6 are beveled and brought together at their lower ends, as shown at 8, where they are secured by stitching 9 to each other and to the straps 10 and 11, to which the belly-band 12 is secured.

13 designates an antichafing-pad covered or padded on its under side with any suitable yielding substance 1e, and. provided on its outer side with loops 15, through which the ends of the saddle pass, thus securing the pad to the saddle in such manner that said pad may be readily removed for repairs or renewal. If desired, the pad 13 may be stiffened or reinforced by a fiat spring interposed between the pad and its lining 14.

saddle for the attachment of the back strap of the harness, and is provided at the opposite side of the saddle with a loop 18 for the attachment of the check-rein.

From the foregoing description, in connec tion with the drawing, it will be apparent that by my improved construction the straps or tongues 4, the strips 5 and 6, and the saddle 1 are all made from a single piece of leather, thus not onlyconducing to strength and durability, but greatly facilitating the process of manufacture of the saddle, as no stitching whatever is required for securing these parts together. The construction described also permits of the ready attachment and detachment of the antichafing-pad, avoiding, as it does, the use of buckles or like fastenings for securing the pad in position. While it may be found advantageous to thicken or reinforce the saddle at its center, as shown in the drawing, I do not regard this as essential, and hence do not restrict the invention in that particular, but reserve the right to make all such minor changes as may fall within the purview of the appended claims.

I claim- 1. A harness-saddle having integral depending ends, each longitudinally slitted to form a central tongue or strap to support the shaft-loops, and two outer strips which lat ter are brought together and secured at their lower ends to the belly-band straps.

2. A harness-saddle comprising the saddle proper and integral depending ends each of which is slitted longitudinally to form three parallel strips, the two outer strips being beveled and secured together at their lower ends in combination ,with belly-band straps secured to the joined outer strips of the saddle, and shaft-loops secured to the ends of the central strips.
