5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. HARTIG, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent at. 630,454, dated August 8, 1899.
Application filed May 13, 1899.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIA F. HARTIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the figures marked on the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a moldboard-plow with a furrow slide by means of which the plow when running will be kept in a level position, and especially so when the weight of the operator is thrown on the handles to raise or depress the plow-point for the purpose of taking more or less ground or, in other words, varying the depth of the furrow.
In plows as ordinarily constructed the heel of the landside extends to the rear of the share or moldboard. When the point of such a plow is raised, for instance, by the operator depressing the plow-handles, the plow, owing to the uneven bearing upon the heel of the landside and the share or moldboard, has a tendency to tilt sidewise toward the mold- This is objectionable, as it causes the plow to run unevenly and a tendency of the plow-point to run away from the land side of the furrow. By applying my improved furrow-slide to the moldboard side of the plow I obviate this objection and produce a plow which is very easy to handle when running and which will ride perfectly level and straight in any kind of soil.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the share of a moldboard-plow to which Ihave applied my improvements. Fig. 2 isa crosssection taken through the share, brace, and my improved furrow-slide. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved furrow-slide detached.
My invention consists in the following constructions and combinations of parts, the details of which will now be referred to and the features of novelty then set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, 1 represents the share of any type of moldboard-plow. This share I Serial No. 716,702. (No model.)
have shown with the point 2 integral therewith, but it will be understood that detachable points may be used in connection with the share.
3 represents the usual brace-bar, which is bolted to the share and moldboard, the other end being shown broken away in the drawings.
4 represents my improved attachment or furrow-slide. This slide is provided with a running horizontal bearing 5, which is secured to the under side of the share at 6, so as to present no obstruction to the movement of the plow at that point. The heel of the furrow-slide or shoe may extend rearwardly to any desired point to accommodate itself to difierent styles of plows and different lengths of landsides, it being generally desirable to have the heel of the landside and the heel of the furrow-slide substantially on a line at right angles to the length of the plow. The length of the bearing 5 is preferably parallel with the landside of the plow.
I may secure the furrow-slide 4 to the under side of the share or moldboard by any improved form of fastening. In the drawings I have illustrated one method of fastening the furrow-slide to the share. For this purpose I provide the furrow-slide with a channel-shaped recess having side walls 8 and a slot 9 in the bottom wall. This recess is adapted to fit snugly over the brace 3, and a bolt 10, which is countersunk in the face of the share 1, passes through a hole in the share,
a corresponding hole in the brace 3, and through the slot 9 and secured by a nut or other fastening 11. By means of the slot 9 I am enabled to adj ustably set the furrow-slide against the under side of the share, so as to adapt one to the other. The side walls 8 aid in holding the furrow slide rigidly in its proper position. The length of the side walls 8 may be varied. In this instance I have shown the rear wall 8 projecting beyond the forward wall. Thus a single bolt secures the furrow-slide rigidly and at the same time permits adjustment of the same.
The construction of this furrow-slide is not confined to the shape shown in the drawings, as it will be understood that various obvious changes may be made in the same and still come within the scope of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. As a new article of manufacture, in con-1 nection with the shares or moldboards of plows, the furrow-slide comprising an extended bearing-plate the front edge of which is secured to the under side of the moldboard or share, a fastening device disposed at an angle to the furrow-slide and having means for ad- 7 justably and rigidly locking the same to the plowshare or moldboard.
2. The combination of a plowshare or moldboard, a furrow-slide secured to theunder side thereof and forming an extended b0t tom bearing-plate, and means for adjustably and rigidly secnringthe furrow-slide thereto.
3; The combination of a plowshare or moldboard, a furrow-slide secured thereto, a brace
