UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK F. MONTFQR OF YUTAN, NEBRASKA.
REIN-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,390, dated August 8, 1899. Application filed June 9,1899. Serial No. 719,921. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK F. MONT- FORT, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Yutan, in the county of Saunders and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Guards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in rein-guards for vehicles.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eifective device for preventing the reins becoming entangled with the trees of the vehicle.
To this end the invention consists incertain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully' described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a perspective view of my improved rein-guard as applied to a two-horse vehicle.
In the drawing the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
1 denotes the pole'or tongue, to which the doubletree 2 is swiveled by the king-bolt 3, and 4. denotes a truss-brace centrally pivoted to said king-bolt beneath the tongue, and its free ends are fixed to the doubletree by the bolts 5 5, as shown. This truss-brace supports the doubletree in a horizontal position, and thereby prevents its wabbling or tipping up and down at its ends, while not interfering with its horizontal movement in its own plane and which is necessary to fill its office as a don bletree.
6 6 denote the singletrees f ulcrumed on the bolts 7 7 in the outer ends of the doubletree, and 8 denotes the rein-guard extending from one singletree-bolt to the other, as shown, and forming a bridge or arch over the contiguous ends of the singletrees, and thereby prevent the reins or lines being entangled under them. This guard is formed with a V-shaped oifset a at this point, which is orificed to receive the king-bolt, and thereby form an additional brace for the guard.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the ininor details of construction may be resorted to vwithout departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a reinguard formed with a central V-shaped and orificed offset, and having its outer ends inclined downwardly and terminating in bolteyes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK F. MONTFORT. Witnesses:
H. H. MILLER, JOHN CRAWFORD.
