UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT CHESHIRE STALEY, BURTON-ON-TRENT, ENGLAND.
KILN FOR BURNING EARTHENWARE, 80c.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,825, dated August 1,1899.
Application filed October 1*, 1898.
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT CHEsHInE STALEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Midway Villa, Burton-on-Trent, in the county of 7 Derby, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Kilns for Burn ing Earthenware, Fire-Clay Goods, and the Like, (for which I have applied for Letters Patent in Great Britain, the said application being numbered 16,335 and dated July 27, 1898,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved kiln for burning pottery and other articles, so as to derive the greatest possible benefit or equalization of the burning power from a given quantity of fuel.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section on line a a of Fig. 2 of a kiln constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan of same on line b b of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention I provide one or more months or burners A A B B at each end of the kiln, (two at each end being shown upon the drawings.) From each of these months or burners run a number of diagonal fines C and 1), respectively, under the bottom of the kiln to the opposite ends and sides thereof, the draft taking the direction of the arrows.
The articles to be burned are placednpon any suitable supports, shelves, or the like in the heart E of the kiln and are protected by the inner wall F, between which and the outer I walls Gthe heat rises from the diagonal under fines and ascends in the space or bag H to the outlet or outlets I.
I may leave a gap-entrance on one or both Serial No 692,936. (No model.)
sides at K and L for placing in and removing 4c the goods from the heart of the kiln, these being, as is well known in pottery-burning, bricked up before the kiln is fired.
It will be evident that the inside or heart of the kiln may be fitted up in any convenient manner for the reception of the various goods and also that it is not necessary to my invention that the said kiln should be square or of any other particular shape, so that the flues run diagonally from the months or burners to distribute the heat evenly underneath,
around, and above the heart of the kiln.
It will be understood that the stops or divisions M are carried up to the crown of the kiln to preserve the separate drafts,
- Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A kiln for burning fire-clay goods comprising the inner and outer. walls with a space ROBERT CHESHIRE STALEY.
