Be it known that I, EENEsT E. CANEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented Ynew and useful Improvements in Garbage-Boxes'of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garbage-boxes; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same by which the gases arising from fermentation of the garbage contained in the box will be deodorized and purified before escaping to the atmosphere, and thus rendered harmless.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a garbagebox constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line m no, Fig. l, looking from below.
In the said drawings, the reference -uumeral 1 designates a rectangular box provided `on one side with a receptacle 2, divided by a vertical partition 3 into two chambers 4 and 5, containing lump charcoal or other absorbent or purifying material.
The numeral 6 designates holes or openings in the upper part of the box, communieating with chamber 4, while lthe outer wall of the receptacle 2 is formed with corresponding openings 7, leading to the atmosphere. Near the lower end of said partition are openings 8, establishing communication between said chambers.
The numeral 9 designates the bottom of the box, hinged to the lower end thereof and provided at the opposite end with a hasp 10, adapted to engage with a staple 12. Secured to the upper end of this bottom, which is dishshaped, as shown, is a screen 13, consisting of a perforated metal plate, the purpose of which is to retain the solid portions of the garbage, but permit the liquid to drain into the bottom, which forms a receptacle therefor. At the front or free end of, the box the screen is formed with an opening 11, which allows the liquid to escape when the bottom is opened.
The numeral 14 designates the cover,hinged to the box 1 and provided with a hasp 15, which engages with a staple 16, secured to the box. This cover consists of a box the sides of which are inclined downwardly and formed with openings 17. Openings 18 are also formed in the bottom of this cover and openings 19 in the top. These latter openings communicate With a chamber 2O on top of the cover, provided with openings in the ends. Said cover is filled with lump charcoal.
In practice the garbage is placed in the box and the cover closed, the liquid draining into the receptacle formed by the dish-shaped bottom, while the solid portions are retained in the box. The gases arising from the fermentation or decomposition of the garbage contained in the box will escape through the perforated top and also through the chambers 4 and 5 during their passage therethrough. The odors and impurities will be absorbed by the charcoaland prevented from escaping to the atmosphere. In emptying the boxthe bottom is opened or lowered, when the liquid will escape through the opening 11 at the front of the screen into a suitable vessel placed beneath the box. The solid portions will at the same time slide off of the screen into the vessel.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with the rectangular box, the hinged perforated cover adapted to contain charcoal, the perforated box on top thereof, the side receptacle having openings near the upper end, the vertical partition having openings near the lower end and dividing said receptacle into two compartments adapted to contain charcoal, of the hinged, dishshaped bottom, forming a liquid-receptacle, the screen secured to the upper end thereof, having an opening at the front end and the hasp and staple, the construction being such that when said bottom is opened the liquid and solid portions contained in said bottom and in the box respectively will be emptied, substantially as described.
