PATENT INVALID-COT.
SPECIFICATION fOrming part of Letters Patent No. 629,658, dated July 25, 1899.
Application filed March 16, 1899. Serial No. 709,276. lNo model.)
[0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I-, BENJAMIN F. CARGILL,
a citizen of the United States of America, re-
sidingat Carnegie, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinven ted certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid- Cots, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
-My invention relates to certain new anduseful improvements in operating cots for invalids.
The object of my invention is to construct a cot of this character with means for turning 7 an invalid upon his back without causing any inconvenience.
A further object of my invention is to construct a cot which after the invalid has been turned upon his back can belowered to the position desired.
A further object of my invention is'to construct a cot for turning an invalid upon his.

sponding parts throughout the severalviews thereof, and iu.which--.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of: my'im proved invalid cot, showing the operating parts therefor, the lower cot being removed.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, showing the op- Fig. 3 is a loncrating-belt in dottedlines. I gitudinal sectional view thereof. e
Referring to the drawings by reference-nu,-
merals, 1 indicatesaseries of standards which are connected by thecross-bars 2 3, forming a frame or support for the various operating parts.
4 indicates the supports for the'lower cot 5.
Mounted in the cross-bars 2 are the shafts 6 7,} having the sprocket-wheels 8 mounted thereon, over which the belt or chain 9 operates. The shaft 6 is'provided at'each end with gearwheels '10, which mesh with the gear-wheels and this shaft [extends outwardly through one ofthe'cross bars or rods 2 and is adapted to be engaged on its extending end 18 by a suitable crank-handle 19 for operating the same.
20 indicates the supporting-standards for the'pla'tform 21, upon which is mounted the upper cot 22. The cot 22, as well as the cot 5, are connected to their platforms by means of the securing-flaps 23 operating on the fastening-pins 24:. The platform 21 has" formed integral with each end the shafts 25 2'5,which operate through the'dovetailed bearing-blocks '26. These dovetailed bearing blocks are adapted to be secured between the standards 20 at the upper end thereof. The shaft 25 is adapted to receive a suitable crank-handle,
for revolving the same. The outer end ofthe "shaft 25' has secured thereto the sprocketwheel 27, which is adapted to be engaged by the bar 28, having a tapering lug .29 formed integral with one side thereof. This bar 28 holds the upper cot 22 in the desired position. The standards 20 have. theelongated slots 30farranged'therein to allow of theoperation' of an. upward=and-downward movement "through the cross-b211 3, which-where they.
are engaged by the standards'ZO is cutaway to allow of. this operatiomas at 31. The inr Y her face of. each of thestandards is'formed with a series of teeth 32, forming a rack-bar, which are engaged by the gear-wheels 11 and.1'7. 7
33 indicates a series of suitable straps se-' cured at one end to the sides of the lower cot 5 for'securing the uppercot' thereto.
The operationof my improved invalid-cot is as follows: Assuming that'the lower cot is The two cots are strapped together and eleinthe position as shown in Fig.2, the uppercot mounted in the said blocks, shafts formed vated by means of the handle 19 revolving the shaft 7, upon which the gear-wheels 17 are mounted. This causes the operation of the belt 9, operating the gear-wheels l1, and it will be readily observed that the gearwheels engage the rack 32, and the two eotswill be elevated to the desired position, when theyare turned by means of the handle engaging the shaft 25. The cots are then lowered to the desired position and the cot 5 removed, the invalid then lying upon his face.
It is thought that the many advantages of my improved cot can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim' as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i l 1. In a device of the character described a support or frame, a series of standards suitably connected thereto having their inner face formed with a rack, bearing blocks mounted in the upper end of said standards, an upper platform having a cot pivotally bearing-blocks, a lower platform adapted to' be mounted upon said frame having a cot suitably connected thereto, means adapted to engage the said rack for elevating and lowering the said upper platform to bring the cot carried therebyinto engagement with the said lower cot, and means for locking, the said upper cot in the desired position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
