Description

@In .dghnl rfmr tu im tlgese @nutrinten ma mating and nf tige anne.l
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known' that I, A. F. HAMMOND, of Houston, inthe county of Shelby, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Device for Throwing Water; and I do hereby declare thev following. to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, sufficient to enable one skilledA in the art to which the invention appertains to make nse'of it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which my invention is represented bya longitudinal sectional View.
The water-chamber of this instrument is emptied by means cfa pistonl operated by a rackv and a pinion upon a crank-shaft. The water is ejected in a stream through a nozzle.
' The invention consists in the arrangement of the parts, whereby a considerable force is broughtto bear upon the piston with one hand, while the other hand supports the apparatus.
The instrument is designed to contain Vas much as can be conveniently handled by one person, say from .one to. four gallons, and being directed byone hand, and supported against the person if necessary',v the handle a is rotated with the right hand, the co'gs-b ofthe pinion engaging those of the rack c, and driving the piston d, in the 'cylinder e, forcibly ejecting the water' at the nozzlej'. -The rac-k c moves in ways or guides in the frame g, in which also the shaft L of the crank has it bearing. The springs k of the piston give it a'certain elasticity, and by compression lduring the operation they will continue to deliver Water at the nozzle forlawhile after the crank ,ceases tol move. The nozzle-f is so socketed in the delivering end of the cylinder that when pressure is brought upon the piston the Water holds the truncated conical nozzle-piece rmly against its seat, but when the end of the empty cylinder is plunged into a tub or bucket oi' Water, the nozzle retreats so as lto permit the entrance of water through the annular space between the conical base of thcnozzle andy its seat. This veiipedites materially the filling of the chamber. -The apparatus is useful in Amanyways: In directing a stream against a distantor inaccessible part-of a roof which is on fire, cr in syringing trees or shrubs infested by insects. If desired, a reservoir-*for the. automatic supply o f water to the chamber may be had, consisting of a. water-tight' bag carried on or suspended to the shoulder, and communicating 'by a flexible tube with the chamber through a valved opening in a plate behind the piston. 4
Having described my invention,` what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of the cylinder c, spring-piston d, operated by rack and pinion, substantially as described and represented. A
2, In combination with the subject-matter of the first claim, I claim the movable nozzle operating as described.
To the above specification of my improved device for throwing water, I have signed my hand this twentyninth day of August,l 1866.
A. E. HAMMOND.
