Be it known that THOMAS OORSCADEN, de-
ceased, late of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
did invent an Improvement in Punching- Dies, of which the following is a specification. The invention has reference to dies for punching rivetor bolt holes in the rims of sheet-metal pulleys; and it consists of certain improvements,'which are fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
The object of this invention is to provide suitable devices for punching holes in the flanged portions of the rim-segments of sheetmetal pulleys.
In the manufacture of sheet-metal pulleys. such, for example, as illustrated in patents to Oorscaden, No. 595,559, dated December 14, 1897, and No. 575,106, dated January 12, 1897-the rims are formed of four sections having internal flanges which are bolted together and to the spoke-arms, and, furthermore, the two semicircular portions of the rim so formed are secured together by rimclamps, sections of which are riveted to the- To enable this result to be speedily accomplished, the invention comprehended in this application isespecially designed for punching the necessary holes in the internal flange of the rim-segment constituting one-quarter of the full rim of the pulley.
In carrying out this invention a set of punching-dies is provided, one part of which, preferably the lower, is provided with a series of' die-plates, preferably-adjustable radially to and from a common center, and also a suitable clamping device for holding the rim-segment in position upon said die-plates. The other portions of the dies are provided with 'in the lower portions of the said guides.
corresponding guides, in which are adj ustably secured suitable punches adapted to operate in conjunction with the punch-plate of the lower dies. By employing dies for simultaneously punching all of the holes in a rimsegment while the same is held in proper curved position absolute accuracy in the location of the holes is secured, and the rim of the pulley runs true in the finished article. The adjustment of the die-plates and punches enables rims corresponding to different diameters of pulleys to be punched, and consequently one set of dies suffices for punching the rims of agreat many different sizes of pulleys.
The invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved dies. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the-lower die. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the upper die. Fig. i is a sectional elevation on line 00 w of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a cross-section of 1 one of the rim-segments.
A is the base-plate or frame of the lower die and is provided with a series of radial guides B B B arranged at angles of thirty degrees apart; but the invention is not confined to any particular number or angular arrangements of these guides. In these guides are arranged, respectively, adjustable blocks 0 C 0 which are movable to or from the center of radiation of the guides and adapted to be locked in various positions by means of springact-uated plugs d, operating in connection with the fixed perforated plates D, arranged y employing two of these plugs a greater possible adjustment is secured with a limited number of holes or perforations in the plates D. Broadly considered, it is immaterial to the invention what means are employed for adjusting the blocks in position upon their guides. The upper portions of these blocks are provided with punch die-plates e, which may be made in any suitable manner, as is well known in punch and die Work. In the blocks 0 and (3 two punch-plates are preferably employed; but in the case of the blocks 0 one punch-plate suffices. It is to be un- 0, O, and G and so arranged as to permit the flange R of the pulley-segment to pass be tween said stripper-plates and the punchpiates, as is clearly shown inFig. 4:. The two blocks C arranged diametrically opposite, are provided with abutments having V- shaped recesses c to receive the ends of rimsegments and hold them in position in all directions except from the side in which they are entered. These abutments may be formed in any other suitable manner desired so long as they perform the function of receiving and holding the ends of the rim-segments. They operate in eifect as one jaw of a clamp, the other jaw thereof being the adjustable lever F, having the clamping-screw f and hinged to the central block 0. It will be observed that when this hand-clamp f is thrown upward. the rim 0' of segment B may be placed in the die, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the flange passing under the strippers and over the die-plates and the ends of the rim or periphery being received in the V- shaped recess 0. \Vhen the lever-clamp f is thrown down into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the rim is pressed forward into position and touches the upper edges of each one of the blocks Oand C, said upper edges being made curved, as indicated, so as to have buta limited point of contact. It will be observed also that these outer edges are inclined inward somewhat and that the portions of the blocksbelow the upper and outer edges are recessed to enable the rim-flanges to be placed in position without contact with the lower portions of the blocks 0; In practice it is customary to have the curvature of the rims of a slightly-less diameter than in the finished wheel, so that when they are clamped in position by the central clamp the intermediate portions are caused to adjust themselves to the outer upper edges of the intermediate blocks 0 and C. This insures the rim lying in the proper shape, so that the punched holes will be accurately located as to position.
Attention is called to the fact that the two holes which are punched in the rim corresponding to the blocks (J are for attachment to the ends of the spokearms, while the single hole corresponding to the blocks 0 are intended for riveting together the two flanges of the adjacent rim-segments without connection to any spoke-arms, but rather for the purpose of reinforcing the rim structure. Attention is also called to the fact that the radial adjustment of the blocks 0 is not made with the same capacity as the blocks 0 and 0 because when the diameter of the pulley is sufliciently reduced so that the space between the outer ends of the spoke-arms does .not become excessive the riveting of the two flanges together intermediate of the spokearms maybe dispensed with. For this reason the long radial guides B B and J J and the short radial guides B J are employed, as shown, the latter and their blocks B J only being employed for pulleys of large diameters.
The two holes to be punched in the rim adjacent to the ends are preferably arranged at a greater distance apart than in the case of the holes for attachment to the spoke-arms, this being to enable the proper connection to the rim-clamps, though the particular distance apart of these holes or the number of the holes is immaterial to this invention.
Referring now to the upper dies, the base plate or frame His provided onits underside with a series of radial guides J, J, and J, corresponding to the several guides B, B, and B of the lower die. These guides are respectively provided with blocks I, I, and I which are adjustable therein and adapted to be located in "arious positions by the employment of the spring-actuated plugs 7t and perforated plates K, corresponding to the plugs 01 and perforated plates d of the lower die. The blocks I and I are each respectively provided with two punches L and L adapted to the punch-plates of the blocks 0 and (J of the lower die. Likewise the blocks I of the upper die are provided with punches L to correspond with the punch-plate in the blocks 0 of the lower die. The upper-die frame is further furnished with two steel pins g, which are received in sockets or recesses G in the rear end of the frame of the lower die, as shown in Fig. 4, the object of which is to properly hold the dies in alinement at or about the time of the punching operation.
The invention is not confined to any special method or means for adjustmentof the blocks 0, C, and C and I, I, and 1 as any other suitable means of adjustment other than that herein set out may be employed, if so desired. While the construction herein shown is preferred. as excellently adapted to the purpose, the invention is not confined to the specific details, as the parts maybe modified without departing from the essential features ofthe invention. It is further to be understood that while it is preferred to punch the rim to receive the rim-clamp this is not essential, and therefore the blocks C may have the stripper E and punch-plates omitted,and likewise the blocks I and their punches may be omitted from the upper dies. It is further to be considered that the guides, blocks, and punches for punching the intermediate holes for riveting the arms between the points of connection with the spoke-arms may be entirely omitted, if so desired, and the punches cor responding to the blocks 0 and I alone em? ployed.
Having now described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of two frames relatively 62?),429 I it movable to and from each other, a series-of radial guides upon the adjacent surfaces of said frames, adjustable blocks in said guides, a clamp device for clamping the work upon the blocks corresponding to one of said frames,
punching-devices having one element carried by the blocks on one of. the frames and the other element carried by the blocks on the other frame, and locking devices for looking the blocks in their adjusted radial position.
3. The combination of two frames relatively movable toand from each other, a series of radial guides upon the adjacent surfaces of said frames, adj ustableblocks in said guides, a clamp device for clamping the work upon the blocks corresponding to one of said frames, punching devices having one element carried by the blocks on one of the frames and the other element carried by the blocks on the other frame, and stripper-plates carried by the blocks upon which the work is clamped for holding the said work against displacement during the punching operation.
4. The combination of two frames relatively movable to and from each other, a series of radial guides upon the adjacent surfaces of said frames, adjustable blocks in said guides, a clamp device for clamping the work upon the blocks corresponding to one of said frames, punching devices having one element carried by the blocks on one of the frames and the by the blocks on one of the frames and the other element carried by the blocks on the other frame, means disposed upon each side of the radial guides and blocks upon which the work is clamped for receiving and holding the ends of the semicircular or curved blank to be punched, and adjusting devices for adjusting the means for holding the ends of the work to or from each other to suit different diameters of pulley-rims.
6. The combination of two frames relatively movable to and from each other, a series of longradial guidesformed thereon, intermedi= ate short radial guides also formed thereon and arranged alternately with the long radial guides, a series of adjustable blocks adapted to the said guides, means for holding the blocks in various positions in the guides, and
punching devices carried by the blocks the punches thereof being secured to the blocks on one of the frames and the, dies secured to the blocks on the other frame.
7. The combination of two frames relativelyv movable to and from each other, a series of long radial guides formed thereon, intermedi- 1 ate short radial guides also formed thereon and arranged alternately with the long radial v guides, a series of adjustable blocks adapted to the said guides, means'for holding the blocks in various positions in the guides,
punching devices carried by the blocks the punches thereof being secured to the'blocks' on one of the frames and the dies secured to -the blocks of the other frame, and suitable clamping devices for holding the work to be punched upon the blocks of the frame having the die portions of the punching devices.
8. The combination of two frames relatively movable to and from each other, a series of long radial guides formed thereon, intermediate short radial guides also formed thereon and arranged alternately with the long radial guides, a series of adjustable blocks adapted to the said guides, means for holding the blocks in various positions in the guides, punching devices carried by the blocks the punches thereon being secured to the blocks on one of the frames and-the dies secured to the blocks of the other frame, suitable clamping devices for holding the work to be punched upon the blocks of the frame having the die portions of the punching devices consisting of two radial adjustable jaws for receiving and holding the ends of the semicircular rim to be punched and a clamp carried by one of the blocks intermediate of said jaws for forcing the semicircular rim against the outer edges of the blocks and into the jaws.
9. The combination of two frames relatively movable to and from each other, a series of blocks secured to one of said frames and having their outer edges arranged in asemicircle, punch-dies secured to said blocks, clamping devices for holding a semicircular pulley-rim upon said blocks in position to be IIO punched, and a series of punches carried by the other frame and adapted to operate in connection with the punch-dies of the blocks of the other frame.
