IMPROVEMENT IN yHYDRAlll TS.

TO ALL lVHOM IT MAY CONCERN: 4
Be it known that I, .IOS-EPH H. BUOKLEY, of New Haven, in the county. of New Haven, and State of CorrI nectieut, have invented a new Improvement in Hydrants; and I do hereby declare the followingf-when taken A in connection with the accompanying drawings and lettersof' reference :marked thereon, tobe-a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and whichsaid drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure I, a vertical central section; and in Figure 2, a plan of the valve'chamber.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of hydrants commonly known'as drinking" or yard hydrants, and consists in the manner of packing the valve-seat. so that the packingvofthe valve alsoforms the packing between the socket and the seat, and combined ywith the arrangement of the waste-way from the valve-v chnmbcr.
Io enable others skilled in the ant tov construct and use'my improvement, I will proceed to describe the Same ns illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the socket or water-way 'attached to the supply pipe at the proper distance from the surface ofA the ground; B the valve-chamber itted to screwinto the socket All() the valve; a the packing, consisting of a ring of leather or similar iecible material, and set between the chamber B and socket A, so as to form a packing bctweenthe two, and at the same time extending inward so as to form a flexible seat for the valve C, as seen in.
the drawing. D is the valve-rod extending up through a tube. E. und stutIing-hox, F, and' held up by a. spring, G, which is of suilicient powerto'snstain the 1 weight of the valve and its rod. Il is the outlet or nozzle through which-the water passes. The tube E'is enclosed in thernsual manner. To draw water, the rod D is depressed by a lever acting upon its upperlend in the usual inanner or any convenient or known device, so as to depress the valve C, as'denoted in red. This will permit thewater to How through the hydrant, and when the power which depressed the valve is removed the forceolL the waterwill close the valve, and when so closed the tube E would remain filled withlwater, To 'this there :ire great objections, and to avoid which I form a tube, I, through the chamber B, :1s-seen in lig. 2, with a conical seat in the centre. as seen in dig. 1, through which the rod passes. und through the socket or otherwise-form outlets d, corresponding tothe tube I, so that the water which romains inA the tuhe will pass out through thc openings d, as denoted by the blue arrows, und in orderl to close thel'tube when the valve isipen,so that no water may be unnecessarily wasted, I form a cone, f. upon the valve-rod, so that when the valve is depressed` thev conc will close'th'e tube I, as denoted in red, g. I. It is frequently necessary to remove the valve-chamber from itssockot, and to replace it again without injury to the valve or thread on the socketis extremely diicult. To Vovercome this difficulty, I form a funnel-shaped guide, L, fixed to the socket in any convenient manner so that the opening through the guide corresponds to the socket, and so that when the valve-chamber iste be inserted it is lowered down, and, striking the inner surface of the funnel in whatever position it may, it will be guided to its propel' position in the socket,
I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming a sellclosing hydrant, neither do I broadly claim a hydrant provided with a self-opening waste-way; but having thus fully described my invention, what Ido claim as new and useful, und desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-
'Ihe combination .of the-valve C, having its seat formed and packed in the manner described, with the chamber B, provided .with waste passage or passages I, ond the conof on the vulve-rod, when thesaid passage or passages I ,arc united or arranged so as to form a central support for thevalve-rod, substantially as .'herein set forth. i v
JOSEIIIII. BUCKLEY.
