Be it known that I, ARTHUR W.-BEABDsELL-,
of Milford, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvementin Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings,
is a specification, like letters and figureson the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates more especially to looms provided with automatic filling-supplying mechanism, whereby the shuttle is provided with afresh supply of filling upon the more or less complete exhaustion of the previous supply or upon its breakage. I

The tail 1) of the filling-fork forms one connection between the weft-ham mer A and the slide bf, the position of said tail or connection being determined by the presence or absence of filling in the shed as the lay comes forward;
but in addition to this connection I have pro vided an independent connection between the slide and the weft-fork, shown as an out- Wardly-eXtended loop-like catch 0, preferably of stout'or heavy wire, with its ends outturned to form pivots, which enter holes in the slide, the catch 0, as shown in Fig. 3, being made wide enough to prevent interference with the weft-fork tail 12 One pivot end of the catch, as O, is extended beyond the side ofthe slide and is bent forward to form an arm 0 outside of the S-shaped detent a, said arm at its free end being up turned and bent inward, as at 0 to be normally engaged by the shoulder a of the detent, as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. A weight 0 is secured to the arm 0 near its free end to prevent disengagement of the end of said arm and the detent by the jarring of the loom or other accidental cause.
The lower extremity of the bu nter m is normallyabovc the path of movement of the dog Z2 as the latter comes forward when the lay beats up; but as the filling in the shuttle diminishes the dog is gradually elevated until when the filling has been exhausted to a predetermined amount the said dog will be elevated sufliciently to engage the depending end of the bunter on the forward movement of the lay, swinging the hunter to the right, Fig. 4, and thereby rocking the S-shaped detent n to withdraw the shoulder n from the overhanging part 0 of the catch 0. Thisdisengagement permits the weight o to drop, and thereby turns the catch 0 on its pivot into position to be engaged by the hook of the wefthammer or actuator, so that on the next outward movement of the latter the slide 12 will be moved outwardly, and its outer end will at such time engage an upturned arm (Z fast on the rock-shaft d, turning the latter sufficiently to operate the filling-supplyingmechanism in well-known manner to thereby insert a fresh supply of filling into the shuttle before complete exhaustion of the filling then in the shuttle. When the shuttle enters the box at the right-hand end of thelay, the feeler will dip down in the empty shuttle-box sufiiciently to raise the dog above the depending end of the hunter m, the said hunter, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4, being rearwardly ,curved to leave a clear space between its pivotal pointand its depending end, so that when the dog is elevated by'the descent of the filling-feeler into the empty shuttle-box said dog will enter the clear space between the ends of the hunter and will not engage the latter. When the filling fails, however, the fork h will not be tilted, and its tail 19 will be engaged by the book of the actuator A to thereby move the fork-slide outwardly, such outward movement of the slide disengaging the cam 12 of the latch d from the end 14 of the stud or pin d, and the latch will drop behind the knock-offlever 19 and stop the loom before there has been a thin place or streak made in the cloth. On the inward movement of the slide the cam 12 rides up .over the end 14 of the pin, and thus raises the latch into normal position.

and in the latter case the filling will not be laid in the shed, and the filling-fork will then operate as before described, and the loom will be stopped before the formation of a thin place in the cloth. It is thus necessary to prevent stopping of the loom on the outward movement of the slide 5 when the fillingsupplying mechanism is operated by or through the feeler-governed mechanism, and to prevent such stoppage I have herein provided a trip to engage and prevent movement of the latch (1 into operative position, so that instead of stopping the loom on the outward movement of the fork-slide the filling-supplying mechanism will be operated.

In aloom, stopping means, a shuttle containing a supply of filling, filling-supplying mechanism, controlling means therefor including a slide, movement of the latter due to filling failure effecting the operation of the stopping means,an actuator for the slide, independent devices to effect coeperation of the slide and actuator, and governing means for each device, the one including a filling-fork and the other including a filling-feeler operative upon predetermined exhaustion of the filling in the shuttle, combined with a trip operated by or through the filling-feeler to prevent actuation of the stopping means by operative movement of the slide after filling exhaustion.

In a loom, the lay, a gravity-controlled filling-feeler pivotally mounted thereon,'a lifter to move the feeler out of range of the shuttle when the latter is thrown across the lay, a dog connected with the feeler, fillingsupplying mechanism, controlling means thereforincluding aslide, a catch mounted on the slide, a weft-hammer, a detent normally maintaining the catch out of the path of the Weft-hammer, and means intermediate said detent and the dog, actuated by the latter to move the detent and release the catch when the filling in the shuttle is exhausted to a predetermined extent.

In a loom, the lay provided with a sh uttle-box, a gravity-controlled carrier mounted on the lay adjacent the shuttle-box and provided with a dog, a feeler on said carrier to cooperate with and determine the quantity of filling inthe shuttle, a lifter to engage said arm and'lift the feeler when the shuttle is thrown, filling supplying mechanism, controlling means therefor including a slide, the weft-hammer, means to operatively-connect it with the slide, to move the latter, and a governing device for said connecting means, operated by or through the dog when the filling in the shuttle is exhausted to a predetermined point.
9. In a loom, the lay provided with a shuttle-box, a gravity-controlled filling-feeler pivotally mounted on the lay adjacent the shut tle-box and having a connected dog, fillingsupplying mechanism, controlling means therefor including a slide, a loop-like catch mounted on the slide, a weft-hammer provided with a hook adapted to at times engage the catch and move the slide, a detent to normally maintain the catch in inoperative posi-' tion, and a rocking bunter to trip the detent,
the dog being moved into position to engage and rock the hunter when the filling in the shuttle has been exhausted to a predetermined extent.
10. In a loom, the lay provided with a shuttle-box, a gravity-controlled filling-feeler pivotally mountedon the lay adjacent the shuttle-box and having a connected dog, fillingsupplying mechanism, controlling means therefor including a slide, a loop-like catch mounted on the slide, a weft-hammer provided with a hook adapted to at times engage the catch and move-the slide, a detent tonormally maintain the catch in inoperative position, and a rocking hunter-to trip the detent, the dog being moved into position to engage and rock the bunter when the filling in the shuttle has been exhausted to a predetermined extent, combined with means to au tomatically set the catch in engagement with the detent after operation of the filling-supplying mechanism has been eifected.

In a loom, the lay provided with a shut- .tle-box, a filling-carrier pivotally mounted on the layadjacent the shuttle-box and Weighted at one end, a filling-feeler attached to the weighted end of said carrier, to intermittingly engage the filling in the shuttle, a fixed lifting-cam to engage and lift the weighted end of the carrier as the lay goes back, filling-supplying mechanism, controlling means therefor, including a slide, a vibrating actuator, a normally inoperative connection between the actuator and the slide, andagoverning device for said connection operated by engagement with the free end of the feeler-carrier when the filling in the shuttle has been exhausted to a predetermined extent.

In a loom, the lay, a feeler mounted thereon to intermittingly cooperate with the filling in the shuttle, filling-supplying mechanism, controlling means therefor, including a slide, a weft-fork on the slide, a vibrating actuator, a catch carried by said slide and adapted to attimes be engaged by the actuator to move the slide, a detent for the catch,
and means operated by or through the feeler when the supply of fillingin the shuttle is exhausted to a predetermined extent, to release the catch and permit the actuation of the slide by its actuator.
13. In alo0m,stopping means, a shuttle containing a supply of filling, filling-supplying mechanism, controlling means therefor including a slide, a normally inoperative latch thereon, means to release the latch, movement of the slide due to filling failure releasing the latch and operating the stopping means by or through said latch, an actuator for the slide, independent devices to effect cooperation of the slide and the actuator, governing means for each device, the one including a fillingfork, and the other including a fillingfeeler operative upon predetermined exhaustion of the filling in the shuttle, and a trip operated by the filling-feeler to engage and movethe latch into inoperative position and thereby prevent actuation of the stopping means by operative movement of the slideafter filling exhaustion. s

In aloom,stopping means, ashuttle containing a supply of filling, filling-supplying mechanism, controlling means therefor including a slide; a normally inoperative latch thereon, means to release the latch, movement of the slide due to filling failure releasing the latch and operating the stopping means by or through said latch, an actuatorfor the slide, independent devices to eflfect cooperation of the slide and the actuator, governing means for each device, the, one including a fillin fork, and the other including a filling-feeler operative upon predetermined exhaustion of ARTHUR W.
