H. BAILEY., STEAM ENGINE.

IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM ENGINES.
, din $tigrhnlt rifmrtit s lips: 'ilrttrrs fitted-int mtiii ig 11m! bi'ilgr time.
TO ALL WHOM 1'1 MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, HENRY BAILEY, of the-city, county, and State of New .York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement'in Steam Engines and Pumps, of. which the followingi's a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, foi'ming part of this specification, and in which-'- Figure 1 represents a partly sectional-plan of a. horizontal engine constructed according to my improvement; and- Figure 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the some.
Like letters indicatelike parts in bothfigures.
The'nature of my invention consists in enclosing arevolving crank audits operating pitman, which connects with a piston working in a cylinder open at its one end, within a steam or watertightlbox, preferably of a formeorrespontling to the travel described by the 'pitman, whereby a rotary motion may be o'b'tained through a. long connecting-rod, in a short space or compass, and a'piston-rod is dispensed with; also, in combination with the foregoing, in pivoting the pitman to the pistonwithin the body'oi' the latter at or about the middle of itsthickness, to the'rednction of lateral pressure or twist upon the piston, and still further enhancing the compactness of the pump or engine for a given length of connecting-rod.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which represents my invention as applied to nhorizontal-steam engine, A is the b'ecbplate of the engine; B its cylinder; 0 'the'valve-box or case; D the exhaust pipe; E the sized driving-pulley or pulleys. The cylinder B is openat its inner end aknlin uninterrupted communication with a. steam-tightbox, H, or, as it may be termed, chambered cylinder-head, within which the main shaft passing through a smiling-box, I, projects, and carries inside of said box a crank. or face plate, J, provided'ivith an eccentric-pin to which the pitman K is attached at its outer end, while its inner end is pivoted to the piston L, within the body of the latter, and centrally orthereabouts of its-depth or thickness. By this. 'construction and arrangement of parts a piston-rod is dispensed, with, lateral pressure or twist on the pist'ow by the direct connection of the pitmzin reducerl,,and a longer connecting-red in a givenspaco obtained, which contributes to the efliciency of the engine, while the compactness eliected is an -important-consideration. The cha-mbereahhead or box H is preferably of a shupeon the inside corresponding to the course oi travel described by the pitman, which reduces the waste of steam in opening the inner end of the cylinder to the exhaust, ascompnred with a square or other shaped box: In applying the invention to a. pump, then themain shaft, insteg rl ofbeing rotated,
by the piston, becomes the driver to reciprocetethe latter for operation in concert with, suitablehvalve's and suction and discharge pipes connected with the'cylinden' In theapplication of my invention to the steam engine, it may here be observed that the inequality of power which occurs in ordinary reciprocating piston engines duringthe two strokes, by'reason of thepiston-rod detracting from the area presented to steam pressure on the piston on its one side or face, is here avoided; when the crank is mnde up of a disk with eccentric-pin, as shown in the drawing then is it important that space should be allowed for steam to pass'in rear of it so as to counteract inside pressure.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. The combination, with the cylinder and its piston, of the steam or water-tight box or chambered cylinderhead, pitman, and revolving crank, all arranged for operation'within said head in open communication with the cylinder, substantially as specified.
v 2. The chambered cylinder-head l5i, constructed with its internal form corresponding to the'conrse described by the pitman in its action, substantially as shown and described. I
