UNITED STATES MARIE CONSTANT ROGQUIN, OF DEER BROOK, CANADA.
GUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,209 ,dated July 18, 1899.
Application filed October 27, 1893- Serial No. 694,757. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARIE CONSTANT time and to so organize such a 'gun that it may be conveniently loaded, automatically fired, and automatically traversed to give a horizontal sweep or movement to the barrels.
- In the drawings, Figure 1- isa side elevation of my improved gun. Fig. 2 is a planor top view of the same. View showing the block for supporting the cartridges in position while being fired and also giving an outside .viewof the firing apparatus. Fig. 4isan elevation of the revolvingcartridgecarryingandholdingdisk. Fig. ,5 is a section through the breech mechanism,
showing the barrels in elevation and the cartridge carrying and holding disk in section; also, the breech-block in section and the firing-hammer and firing-pins in elevation.
Figs. 6 and 7 are details showing the support for the front end .of the barrels of the gun. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail showing the percussion-pins for igniting a groupof cartridges in the gang ofbarrels. Fig. 9 is a broken elevation of the disk or block which carries the barrels and the revolving cartridge-car'- rying disk. Fig. 1Q is a detail section showing a movable bearing for geanshaft 24.
1 is a framework or cradle for supporting the operative parts of my improved gun.
This frame or cradle may be mounted on wheels, like an ordinary field-piece, or it may be provided with legs or handles to be moved about like a hand-barrow. The frame is provided with lower parts, risers, and rails, as
illustrated in the drawings, and may be of any suitable construction. The gun proper is mounted on or 1n this frame and consists Fig. 3 is a rear end of a substantial disk or block 2, with which a gang of barrels 3 is connected and to which a large disk or breech-block 4 is hinged. The barrels are by preference made slightly divergent both horizontally and vertically. The object of this arrangement of barrels is that upon the discharge of any gangor series a considerable lateral range will be covered,
as well as to provide for striking at dilferent distances, the trajectory of each horizontal series of barrels being slightly varied, so as to make a wide zone of danger even in case of comparatively high trajectory of all of the barrels. I have represented in the example shown in the drawings gangs of barrels, nine in number, arranged in horizontal and vertical order,- as shown; but this arrangement may be varied to increase or decrease the gangs, as may be desired, without departing from my invention. a The diskor block 2 is supported atits lower edge on a pivot 5, so that itmay have a universal movement about said pivot or support.
The barrels rest on supports 6 and 7, ar-
ranged to rise and fall in suitable guideways in the frame, and the elevation of the barrels issecured'by means of an adjusting- -screw 8; The supports 6 and 7 are provided with dovetail tongues or splines 9 to provide for the lateral movement or traverse of the barrels from sideto side to givea horizontal sweep. The support 6 is sustained between springs 10 10, the upper spring serving in part to take up therecoil from the gun and the other to give a resilient support or cushion for the same. The forwardend of the barrels are normally carried and supported on the thwart-support 6, the support being sus tained between the springs 10 10. The traversing screw 22 carries at its extremity a bolster 8, and as it is raised by the elevatingscrew the barrels are carried with it. By operating the elevating-screw so as to carry the bracket downward and away from the barrels they are allowed to restand be carried on the spring-support 6. The elevating-screw 8 works in threaded block 8 and is coupled with the block 8 by a swivel connection, so that when operated it raises and lowers the block 8 between the guides 8 S and through it-the traversing screw 22 and bracket 8.
11 is the revolving cartridge carrying or holding disk, provided with a plurality of gangs of chambers, each corresponding with the gang of barrels in the gun. This disk is provided with gear-teeth on its outer periph- -ery and alsowith a studor projection 12,
which engages a groove 13 in the disk or blfick 2. The revolving cartridge-disk is also provided with projections or studs 14, through the medium of whi'clfit is mounted or adjusted to revolve in hearings in block 2 and breech-block 4'. The breech-block carries a multiple hammer 15 for imparting a heavy blow to the plate 16, which carries a plurality of points or firing-pins 17. Mounted onthe hub of the rear projection 14 is a notched cam-disk 18, which serves to automatically cook or throw the hammer 15 back and release the same as the cartridge-holding disk is rotated. The breech-block or abutment for holding the cartridges in position is locked or held to its place by any suitable means, such as hooks or latches 19. The purpose of the stud 12 on the cartridge-carrying disk and the groove 13 in the'main disk or block is to indicate that all the cartridges in the revolving disk have been exploded or that a complete revolution has been-made by stopping or checking the operation of the cylinder or disk. Connected with the revolving cylinder or disk is a train of gearing 21, ex-
tending forward toan elongated gear connected with a traversing screw 22, through the medium of which the cartridge-holding disk or cylinder is operated, and simultaneously therewith the barrelsare laterally traversed, as will clearly appear from the drawings.
In order that the traversing screw and its pinion 23 may be raised and lowered without throwing the teeth of the gears of the train out of mesh, the shaft 24 01: gear-wheel 25 is mounted in movable bearings 26, a spring 27 resting upon the top of the bearing to yieldingly hold the same. The bearings being movable in inclined ways 28, as shown, the gear-teeth of the train, which are long and of the type known as expansive gears, will remain in mesh through the short are the barrels are moved in adjusting them in use;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a battery-gun, the combination of a cradle or support, a main disk or block coupled with the cradle so as to have universal movement, a gang of, barrels attached to the block, and means for elevating and traversing the barrels with relation to the cradle, substantially as described.
2. Ina battery-gun, the combination of a cradle, amain disk or block supported at the,
rear of the cradle on a stud or pivot so as to have universal movement with relation to the cradle, a gang of barrels attached to theblock', and a separate spring-support for the forward end of the barrels, substantially as described.
3. 'In a battery-gun, the combination of a cradle, a main disk or block' supported at the rear end of the cradle, upon a. stud or pivot, a gang of barrels attached to the block, a revolvingcartridge-holding cylinder, a breechblock hinged to the main disk, a hammer mounted on the hinged breech-block, and a notched cam-disk operatively connected with the revolving cylinder, substantially as deseribed'.
4:. In a battery-gun, the combination of a cradle, a main-disk or block supported at the rear end of the cradle, so as to have universal movement, a gang of barrels connected with the block, a rotary cylinder having a pinrality of gangs of cartridge-chambers, and a traversing and cylinder-operating device consisting of a train of gearing extending from an operating crank-handle and a traversing screw and, from said handle to the revolving cylinder, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aihx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARIE CONSTANT 'ROCQUIN.
