* vsPnoIrIcATIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,142, dated Jury e, 1899.
Application led November 18, 1897. Serial No.l 869,060. (No model y I Traa@ wiz/07u it 79mg (umn/ern.:
Be itknown that I, ERIC HERMAN ERICsoN, a subject of the King'of Sweden and Norway,
, and a resident of Kpniansgaban 301, in the city of Oscarshamn, Sweden, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Gun-Canes, (for Awhich I have obtained patents in Sweden, No. 8,067, dated Octobeil, 1896; in England, No. 14,109, dated June 5, 1897, and in Norway, No. 5,8l2,`dated June 2, 1897,) of which the following is a specification, reference b cin'ghad to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the same.
,This invention relates to improvements-in gun-canes, and has for its principal object to providea cheap and reliable gnn-cane in which the handle containing the breech-block may after having opened the breech be turned backward alongside the barrel, so as to be out ofthe Way while the gun is being loadedvor unloaded.
`The invention consists in the constructiom and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the handle end of a gun-cane according to this invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view with the handle turned forward. Fig. 4 is a plan-view of the same, and Fig. 5 is an end view with the handle removed.
The handle end of the barrel tris provided with a socket or hoop b,. fastene'd 'by means of a screw c, extending into a groove d, which v partly surrounds the barrel in such a manner that the said socket may be turned about a quarter of a revolution around the barrel of the gun. Said socket is on one'side provided with a projection e, in which the handle f, which also constitutes the breech-block of the gun, is sopivoted that thesame may be turned 4, of a revolution around the barrel. The breechl .block is provided with two' similar inwardlydirec'te-projoctions it.' Said projections J' andh are adapted to pass each other when the breech is being closed, and when the handle and socket are turned about ninety'degrecs, to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
.fthe said inward projections h in the breech- ...block pass behind the said outward projections g of the barrel, so that the breech is locked. By turning thehandlefand socket il) about a quarter ofa revolution around the axis ofthe barrel, from the position shown in Figs. 15- and 2 to the position shownn Figs.'
2 and 3 by dots and dashes, the projections g and h c oine outv of gear, so as to pass between each other. The breech-block is thus unlocked andthe handle may beturned backward to the position shown in Fig, 3 by full lines. In this position the breech-block is out ofthe Way, so that a cartridge l can beinserted or extratced. In the projection f a cartridge-extractor 'L' is independently pivot- .nd, preferahlnanonmlahensame center. as the handle, and the handle is provided with a small projection 7s, adapted to engage with the said cartridge-extractor in such a manner that the cartridge Z is drawn out when the handle is turned backward to its extreme position. The handle/"is of course provided with any suitable cock, trigger, &c. for firing the gun.
That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a gun-cane, the combination with the barrel,of a socket adapted to be turned around the barrel about a quarter of a revolution and provided with a side projection, a handle c0nstituting the breech-block and containingany weil-known cock-and-trigger arrangement for firing the gun pivoted in the said side projection to be turned on its pivot from a position at about a right` angle with the length of the barrel, when the breech is closed, to a position parallel with the barrel when the breech is fully open, and a cartridge-extractor pivoted in the said projection of the socket' and adapted to be 'actuated by the handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 12th day of June,
ERIC HERMAN ERICSON. lWitnesses:
BERTIL BRANDER, P. A. LARssoN.
