No. 628,005. Patented July 4, I899.

(Application filed Oct. 17, 1895.)
(No Model.)
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARCHIE A. HISTED AND CLAUDE MERSHON, OF DES MOINES, 10 WA.-
BICYCLE PUMP CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,005, dated July 4, 1899.
Application filed October 17, 1898. Serial No. 693,723. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that we, ARCHIE A. I-Irsrnn and CLAUDE MERSHON, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle Pump Connections, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a connecting device to afford communication without leakage between the discharge-tube of an air-pump and the valve-stem of a pneumatic tire, such as is now in use on bicyclewheels.
Our invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in our claims, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings,- in which Figure 1 is an outer end elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a detail face view of a packing-valve employed in the device. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the device on the indicated line at 4 of Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the device on the indicated line 5 5 of Fig. 2, the packing-valve being in full lines.
In the construction of the device, as shown, the numeral 10 designates a tubular stem provided with peripheral ribs, and of such size and shape as tobe received within one end portion of a flexible hose, (not shown,) the opposite end portion of the hose communicating with the discharge-port of an air-pump of any.
desiredconstruction or with a compressed-air reservoir. I
A chamber 11 of materially greater diameter than the stem 10 is formed on one end of said stem and projects longitudinally therefrom, a concavity 12 in the chamber communicating with the bore of the stem. The chamber 11 is slightlyreduced in diameter at its outer end, and the reduced portion thereof is screw-threaded on its periphery. An annular shoulder 13 is formed on the interior of the chamber 11 near the reduced extremity thereof, and a concavo-convex washer 14,preferably made of india-rubber, is mounted within and transversely of the chamber with the marginal portion of its convex face in contact with the outer face of said shoulder, the apex of the washer being directed toward the stem 10 and the aperture 15 of the washer being the valve-stem of the tire to pass therethrough and through the aperture of the washer. The aperture of the washer is of slightly less diameter than the external diameter of the valve-stem of the tire, and said washer expands to receive the stem and contracts thereon, thereby producing a packing-valve therefor. The pressure of air in the chamber when the device is in use increases the compression or contraction of the packing-valve on the tire-stem and aids in forming an air-tight joint between the stem and washer. The washer may be made flat or nearly so, if desired.
We claim as our invention- 1. The connecting device comprising the chamber, the packing-valve in the chamber apertured to receive a valve-stem, the cap on the chamber apertured to receive the valvestem and means for attaching the chamber to an air-pu mp or source of air-supply.
2. A- hollow stem having a chamber at one end thereof, the concavo-convex packingvalve mounted in and transversely of the chamber and centrally apertured to admit a tire valve-stem, a cap screw-seated on the chamber and apertured to receive the'valvestem, and a shoulder on the interior of the chamber against which the packing-valve rests.
3. A bicycle pump connection having a chamber, the annular shoulder on the interior of the chamber, the concavo-convex packingvalve mounted in and transversely of the chamber with the marginal portion of its convex face contacting with the annular shoulder and the apertured cap screw-seated on the chamber, together with means for attaching the chamber to the discharge-pipe of a Source of compressed-air supply.
