Be it known that I, Louis A. VIDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ogden, in the county of Weber and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. l
The present invention pertains to air valves and relates more particularly to valves of this character which are used in conjunction with pneumatic tubes, tires or the like.
Many of the air valves now in use are provided with a metal valve head which is adapted to rest upon a metal valve seat which results in the sand or grit forced by the air through the valve to rest between prevents tight closing of the Valve and the results of leakage of air therethrough.
The object of the present invention resides in constructing a valve with a flexible valve seat made of suitable yielding material upon which the valve is adapted to rest so that the sand, grit or other foreign matter which is deposited upon the valve seat will be compressed therein, thereby permitting the tight closing of the valve and pre- The'inve'ntion has for a further object a simple, durable and eflicient construction of apparatus of this character, the parts of which may be cheaply manufactured and readily installed, and. which will require practically no attention to maintain in proper running order. And the invention also aims to generally improve this class of devices and to render them more useful and commercially` desirable.
. In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that the right is reserved to any changes, alterations, and modifications to which recourse may be had within the scope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the eiiiciency of the same.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a vertical section embodying my invention and illustrating the valve in a closed position, Fig. 2 is a similar section illustrating the `valve in an open position, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3--8 of F ig. 1. l
Reference now being had to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are Adesignated by similar reference characters throughout the several views the numeral 1 indicates a Valve casing having depending therefrom a stem 2 which is adapted to be connected to a flexible tube in the usual manner which is in communication with the air suppl tank. The casing 1 is provided with a cylindrical bore"3 which is in communication with a bore 1 formed within the depending tube 2 by means of a. conical portion 5. The upper end of the bore 3 is reduced in diameter and threaded in which is adapted to be mounted the lower reduced threaded portion 6 of the plug- 7 This plug 7 is provided with a cylindrical bore 8 adjacent to its lower eX- tremity which is in communication with the bore 8 and the upper extremity of this bore terminates in a conical-shaped portion 9. The upper end of the plug 7 is provided with a reduced threaded portion 10 upon which is adapted to be mounted a cap 11 having an enlarged opening formed in the medial portion thereof indicated by the numeral 12.
A valve 13 is adapted to be mounted with-- in the casing and has formed integral therewith a valve stem 14 which is reciprocally mounted within the bore 8 of the plug. This valve stem 14 is provided with an L-shaped opening 15 whereby when the valve is open the bore 3 will be in communication with the enlarged bore 9 of the plug.
The lower face of the plug 7 is provided with an annular groove 16' in which is mounted a packing ring 17 formed of rubber or similar resilient material. A coil spring 18 rests upon the conical seat 5 and is adapted to normally hold the valve 14 upon its valve seat 17 thereby cutting oif communication between the opening formed within the stem 2 and the opening formed within the plug 7.
A suitable packing ring 19 formed of rubber or similar resilient material rests upon the upper face of the plug and has a depending central apertured portion 20 in the lower end of which rests the upper conical-shaped end 21 of the valve stem 15. This packing ring 19 is also provided with an annular flange 22 which forms an air tight connection between the plug 7- and the cap 11. A metal ring 23 rests upon the upper face ol2 the packing ring 19 and has a centrally l0- cated openlng 24 formed therein being ot greater diameter than the opening formed within the depending portion 2O of the packing ring.
It is obvious from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that when the tube- 25 of a pump or pressure tank is i serted within the opening formedv withint 1e depending portion 20 of the valve ring the lower en will rest upon the upper end of the valve stem and upon forcing the tube upon the stem of the valve a pressure will be offered upon the valve whichwill relieve the sameagainst the ,tension of the coil spring 18 thereby permitting the air to come from the supply tank through the opening 2, then through the L-shaped opening of the valve stem and thence lnto the tube of the tire as 1s more clearly illustrated drawing. The depending in Fig. 2 of the portion 20 of the packing ring will obviously grip the stem 25 and hold the valve upon the same while .the air is being forcedwithin the tire. Vheu the valve is released from the stem 25 the coil spring 18 and the air under pressure coming through the pipe24 will force the valve 14 upon the valve seatv thereby cutting oil' all communication. between' the supply tankand` the-atmosphere. From this con-- struction, it is obvious that when any sand, grit, or other foreign matter accumulates upon the valve seat 17, the pressure of the coil spring and the air contained within thepressure tank will force the valvel upon its` seat thereby. compressing such foreign matter within the valve seat which is formed ot' rubber or other similar resilient material.l

In a. device of the character described comprising'a sectional casing, said casing having an inlet opening formed therein, u flexible valve; mounted within the casing, a valve stern yieldingly held one section ofv within said casing and having an L-shaped opening therein, one end of said L-shaped opening communicating with said-inlet opening, the opposite end of said valve stem having a disk formed integral therewith and adapted to rest within an opening formed within the casing, said disk being adapted to close the L-shaped opening formed within the stem, substantially as and forthe purl pose described.

In a device of the CharaCterdeSCribed comprising a sectional casing, an inlet opening formed therein, a flexible ring mounted within the upper face of one section and extending within said inlet opening, a cap for retaining said flexible ring upon said section, a metal ring interposed between said flexible ring and said cap a valve stem yieldingly held within said having an L-shaped-openingformed therein, the opening in one end of said stem beingln communication with the inlet opening, and the opposite end of said valve stem havinga disk formed integral therewith and adapted to rest within lan opening formed within the iiexible ring and casing, said disk being adapted to close the
