Be it known that I, STEPHEN SHANAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, Kanawha county, West Virginia, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Clamps, of which the fol-'' lowing is a specification.
My invention is a device to be used in applying the sealing or fillingv medium in joining the ends of pipes of that class in`whicli one of the joining ends is cup-shaped or 4provided with an enlarged annular iiange; into which the end of the pipe to be joined. thereto is placed and solder or the like is run into the space between-the flange and the inner pipe to provide the filling or sealing medium to secure the ends together.
The invention includes a split ring adapted to inclose the inner pipe and close the end of' the annular chamber formed by the inclosing flange and means for clamping the ring in place and locking the same in clamped position. It also includes a removable fillingblock adapted to be inserted between Wthe ends of the ring to preserve the continuity'of the ring when clamped in place and to provide a filling-opening. Y
t The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of the invention applied to a pipe, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of' a pipe with the device securedthereto.
The drawings illustrate two sections of pipe the ends of' which are to be joined, the one section a having a cup-shaped end formed by the annular flange Z) and the section'c being adapted to have its end inserted therein. In the annular space d, formed between the iiange and the inner pipe, a filling and sealing medium is poured in a molten state and allowed to set. To provide for the easy accomplishment of this operation my invention is designed, which will now be described. A split ring, Fig. 1, of suitable material, such as hemp or rubber, of the proper width and of such thickness that when clamped in place, as will be hereinafter described, it will project beyond the periphery of the flange b, has secured toits outerperiphery a strap 2, formed of a series of sections hinged together. The ends of the straps terminate at the ends of the ring l, and from their extreme ends radial pillars 3 4 extend, which may be integral withthe ends of said strap or which may be separate pieces riveted to the same.
To the outer end of the pillar 3 a bridgebar 5 is pivotally secured, which has its free end 6 angularly turned, and when the-clamp isapplied this end occupies a position directly in the rear of the pillar 4. A lever 7, 'pivoted intermediately of' its length to this end,carries `a bracket 8, longitudinally adjustable thereon, which is retained in place `by a binding-screw, and in this bracket a to this arm an elastic filling-block 16 is secured. This block is of the same thickness as the ring, and the arm is so placed that when swung in place it will bear against the end of the ring contiguous to which the bracket i secured.
In placing the device upon a pipe the block is swung back and the bridge-bar also swung around on its pivot, and then by spreading the ring it can be forced around the pipe to which it is to be clamped. It is then positioned so that the ring will abut against the edge of the flange b and close the annular space d. The filling-block being moved into place and Ythe bridge-piece being also moved backto bring its end 6 to the rear of the pillar 4, the lever, which is in a vertical position with the roller at the botto-m of the way, is depressed, which will force the roller to ride up the way and draw the ends of the ring together to firmlyf clamp the filling-block between the same. As the pivotal point of the lever is below the end of the way when the roller reaches the limit of its movement, the tendency of the ends to separate'serves to more tightly bind the roller against the end of the way and effectually lock the parts together.
The block, while of the same thickness as the ring, does not extend inwardly the Afull width of the same, so that a filling space or IOO opening a; is left when the block is in place and the ring applied, through which the filling and sealing medium is poured.
I claiml. In combination the split ring, the fillingblock carried by one end of said ring adapted lo occupy a position between and in line with the ends of said ring, and means for clamping the ends of said ring against said block, substantially as described.
2. In combination, the split ring, the filling-block, the pivoted arm carrying the same, whereby the block may be swung into a position between and in line with the ends of the ring and means for clamping the ends against said block, substantially as described.
3. In combination, the split ring, a bracket extending laterally from said ring, a iillingblock,an arm secured to the outer side thereof, a pivotal connection between said arm and the bracket located between the outer face of the block and the ring whereby when the arm is swung to a position substantially parallel to the side face of the ring the block will occupy a position between and in line with the ends of the ring and the means for clam ping said ends against said block, substantially as described.
4. In combination, the ring, the strap secured to the periphery of the same, radial pillars extending therefrom at the ends thereof, a bridge-piece secured to one pillar and means carried by said bridge-piece adapted to have a rolling engagement with the opposite pillar to clamp and lock said ring, substantially as described.
5. In combination, the ring, the fillingblocli, the pillars extending radially from the ends of the rings, the bridge-piece pivotally connected to one pillar having a free end adapted to be placed in rear of the second pillar, a lever intermediately pivoted to said end, and a roller carried by said lever engaging the rear of the second pillar, substantially as described.

In combination, the ring, the sectional strap, the filling-block, the pillars extending radially from the end of the strap, the bridgepiece pivoted to one pillar, having afree end extending to the rear of the second pillar, a lever, a way in the second pillar, a lever intermediately pivoted to the end of the bridgepiece below the end of said way and a roller guided in said Way carried by one end of said lever, substantially as described.
7. In combination, the ring, the sectional strap, the lling-block, the pillars extending radially from the end of the strap, the bridgepiece pivoted to one pillar having a free end extending to the rear of the second pillar, a way in the second pillar, a lever intermediately pivoted to the end of the bridge-piece below the end of said Way, and a roller guided in said way carried by one end of said lever, said roller being adjustable to and from the pivotal point of the lever, substantially as described.
