Description

II UGH II. CRAIGIE, O II NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 62,734, dated liirm'ch 12, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN BASINS.
'I'O ALL WIIOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, IIUGH II. CRAIoIl-I, of 'the city and State of NewYork, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful improvement in Basins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved basin through the horn or overiow pipe; and
Figure 2 is a sectional plan at' one side of the basin.

Urinals have heretofore been made with a circular or triangular tube running around the inside near the upper edge, and from this holes pass downwards into the basin, so that water supplied into such pipe might wash off the interior surface of the basin. This mode of construction was not adapted to wash basins, because the said surrounding tube contracted the basin and destroyed its interior conformation; besides this the said tube', and the small openings therefrom into the basin, were not adapted to the purposes of an overiow for carrying off the surplus water in case the faucet was left running. Overliow pipes have also been provided -in other characters of basins, but they have been only on one side ofthe basin, opening into the same by a cluster of holes. 'lhe nature of my said invention consists iu a basin formed with a Hat-tened horizontal.water-way around its outer and upper edge, opening into the basin through the sides thereof, so that the general configuration of the interior ofthe basin is preserved, and an overflow water-way is obtained that is of ample capacity for carrying` away any surplus water that may run into the basin. The pipe or horn in my basin that conveys the overiiow from said unter-way is not made upon the outside of the basinitself, as heretofore, but it is formel upon the outside of the aforesaid attened water-way.
In the drawing, a represents the basin proper, formed of the usual or desired Vcurved or hemispherieal interior shape; b is the opening for receiving the socket and pipe, at the bottom of the basin, for allowing the escape of the water by the withdrawal of a plug` as usual, and e is the ange surrounding the upper portion of the basin, and sustaining the same. Beneath the ange e, and outside the genera-i interior contour of the basin u, I form the flattened horizontal water-way d, in the china or other material of which the basin is composed. 'Ihis water-way d is fiattened in order that the width of the Hangs e and upper vedge of the bas-in may not be unnecessarily increased, and at the same time a suiiicient capacity in the water-Way may be obtained. From the water-way d there are openings, sufficient in size or capacity. to conduct awa-y any surplus water that may be allowed to run into the basin. I have shown a row of holes, butthe openings may be formed as desired. The horn or overow pipef-is formed upon the outside of the water-way d, and is of suitable capacity adapted to take away all overow water from the basin to a pipe leading to a drain or sewer. This construction of basin is di'erent from all others heretofore made, in the particulars enumerated; and, while the general interior appearance ofthe basin is preserved, increases the capacity of the overflow suiiieie'ntly to prevent accidents that often happen from faucets being left open after the basin has filled to the maximum height.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stationary wash-basin, with a horizontal attened water-way around the upper portion of said basin and outside of the general curvature of the interior of the basin, said water-way opening into the basin through the sides thereof, so as to take away the surplus or overow water from the basin, as specified.
I also elailn forming the descending'horn or overfiowpipe upon the outer side of said horizontal water-way and opening into the same, as specified. l
In witness whereof I have hereunto sct my signature this twenty-second day of November, A. D. 1866.
