No. 627,0l6.
(N0 model.)
Patented lune I3, |899. J. F. SCHULTHEISS. SINK TRAP PBUTEGTOR.
(Application led Mar. 29. 1899.)
rrEn STATES PATErrr- OEEicE.
JOSEPH FREDRICK SCHULTHEISS, OE NORTH PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
SINK-TRAP PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 627,016, dated J une 13, 1899.
Application filed March 29, 1899. Serial No. 710,953- (No model.)
T all whom, t 77mg concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH FREDRICK SCHULTHEIss, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sink- Trap Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sink-valves, and more particularly to that class of sink stench-protectors which are intended to prevent the sewer-gas from passing backward through the sink; and the o bject is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective device of this character.
' To these ends the inventionl consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, Which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved stench-preventervalve as it appears applied to a kitchen-sink. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of thesame.
l denotes a hemispherical float formed with a flat bottom 2, provided with a serrated flange 3, in which is secured a rubber disk 4 of a size corresponding to the sink strainer-plate, as shown.
5 denotes a tubular guide-stem closed at its top and extending vertically through the rnbber washer 4f, the bottom 2, and the iioat l, the lower end of the tube extending through the strainenplate to permit the device to rise and fall by the action of the Water in the sink.
When the device is at rest, the rubber Washer rests on the strainer-plate and forms a valve to close the same and eftectuaily pre vents any foul gases from backing up from the sewer through the sink into the room.
I/Vlien Waste Water is run into the sink, it raises the iioat and escapes and the float falls again and seals the outlet.
When it is desired to iill the sink with water, Which may be necessary at times, a detachable Weight 6 is slipped over the upper end of the stem 5 to counteract the tendency of the float.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form noW known to me; but many changes in the details might be made Within the skill of a good mechanic Without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in theclaim at the end of this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The float l formed With the bottom 2 and provided with a serrated or toothed [lange 3, a rubber disk 4 secured therein, the vertical stein 5, secured in said oat, and an independent Weight adapted to overcome the buoyancy of said float, substan ti ally as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnes'ses.
JOSEPH FREDRICK SGllUl/llllilSS.
