UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
PRINTING-FORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters retenv Ne. 626,649, dated June 6, 1899. Application filed July 7,1898. Serial No. 685,299. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MICHAEL Bow- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing- Forms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a .novel form of make-up for printers use; and the object of the invention is to provide a means for utilizing the space occupied by the foot or side sticks and the quoins used iu locking the form in the chase for printing purposes, so that the margins of a page surrounding the form proper may Contain advertising or other reading matter, which is imprinted thereon at the same time that the form is printed.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details Inight be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claims at the end of this specification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a form embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a plan View of an impression of a page or sheet taken from my improved form.
l represents the chase, and 2 the form.
3 represents the head and et the side sticks.
6 6 denote the furniture, and 7 7-the quoins employed to lock the whole within the chase.
The sticks and the furniture are each formed with a type-high flange 8, which projects laterally beyond the marginal line of the forms and extends over the chase. flanges are provided with electro or stereo type printing-faces arranged to justify with the form, and consequently the form proper and the marginal matter are both inked and printed at the same operation.
l/Vhile I have only shown my invention as applied to a single chase, the same principle applies to twin, news, and book chases, as well as galleys or any of the various devices employed for locking up a form or taking a proof or impression therefrom.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
l. As a new article of manufacture, a piece of printers furniture formed With a lateral flange having a printing-surface, substan-A tially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a chase, of a piece of furniture, such as a side, head or foot stick, formed with a lateral iiange adapted to project over the chase-bars, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a chase, of a piece of furniture formed with a lateral flange provided With a printing-surface extending over the chase-bar and means for locking said furniture in said chase, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
CHARLES MICHAEL BOWMAN. Witnesses:
