Be it known that 1, J OHN BENJAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Baby'Jumper, Swing, and Rocker; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a combined babyjumper, swing, and rocking-chair and its object, among other things, is to provide a de vice of this character which will be convenient and efficient in use, simple in construction, and readily placed in operative position.

Further objects are to so construct the device as to permit a child to sit in an upright or inclined position while swinging or rocking and to provide means of peculiar construction and adjustment whereby the child may be securely held in the chair at all times.

To these ends the invention consists in providing a cliaiigthavin g legs pivoted to the rock ers, chair-sea and arms, said legs being retained in an upright position by means of a catch of peculiar construction, upon the release of which the chair may be forced into a reclined position.

The invention also consists in providing a peculiar arrangement of ropes for suspending the chair as a swing or jumper, said ropes also serving as means for retaining a guardbar of peculiar construction in position, said guard-bar being provided with clamps adapted to bind upon said ropes, and thereby lock said guard-bar in position to prevent the child from falling from the chair.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described, and illus trated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of myjinvention, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a detailed side elevation showing the chair in upright position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the catch unhooked and the chair in inclined position. Fig. 4. is a modified form of base; and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the guard-bar, showing the ropes therein, one clamped and the other loose.

Referring to said figures by letters of reference, A A are the rockers of any desired form, preferably constructed with a split or two-piece cross-bar a, as shown,within which, near the ends thereof, are pivoted the lower ends of the legs B of the chair. Said legs eX- tend upward a suitable distance and are pivoted near their upper ends to the arms 0 and at a point intermediate their length to the seat D of the chair, said cross-bars a, seat D, and arms G being parallel. Said seat D is of any desired construction and is provided with a transverse bar 61 thereunder, the ends of said bar projecting beyond the sides of the seat and secured to and supporting side strips D, free at their ends and bearing upward against eyes c or other suitable projections formed by the outwardly-extending portion of the pivots E of the legs and seat. Pivoted to the upwardly-extending portion of each of the rear legs B, at a point intermediate the seat D and arms 0, is a catch-bar F, extending across the side of the chair and overlapping the front legs. Said bars F are each provided at a point near their front ends with a guide F, adapted when the chair is upright to bear against the rear edge ofthe front leg. Said guides F likewise normally project downward into the slots f, formed by the side strips D and chair-seat I). At a point intermediate the ends of catch-bar F is pivoted a catch F preferably of the form shown, adapted to hook down over the end portions of the transverse bar 01 when the legs of the chair are upright, and thus retain the whole chair in an upright position.

It is of course obvious that the upwardlyextending portions of the rear legs may be connected by slats or in other suitable manner, forming a back G, as shown. The front legs of the chair, however, merely project slightly above the arms, as at b, said projections serving to prevent transverse movement of a guard-bar H, having shoulders it formed on its under surface near each end and abutting against the said projections b. It is,of course, obvious that the ropes may be looped up over the back or placed in other suitable position if it is desired to use the invention as a rocker.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of'my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the wad-vantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is

1. The combination, in a combined babyju'mper, swing and rocker, of legs pivoted to the rockers, seat, and arms, means, as described, for retaining said chair in an upright position, side strips secured to said seat, ropes secured in said side strips, springs secured to said ropes, and a guard-bar strung on said ropes, said bar having means, as described, for preventing movement of the ropes therein, all substantially as described.

5. In a device of the character'described, the combination of the rockers, the legs pivoted thereto, and the platform pivoted therebetween, the seat pivoted to said legs, the transverse bar, d,'secured to said seat, a side strip secured to said bar, r1, forming a slot, f, arms pivoted to said legs,a catch-bar piv oted at one end to the rear leg, intermediate l the arm and seat, aguide on the opposite end thereof normally projecting into said slot, f, a catch pivoted to said catch-bar and adapted to engage with said transverse bar, d, to retain thechair in an upright posit-ion; with ropes secured and arranged substantially as described, a guard-bar, H, strung on said ropes, cam levers and shoulders on said 10 guard-bar, H, adapted to clamp said ropes for the purpose described, a box secured to said guard-bar, and a figure detachably secured to said box, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
