JOSEPH C. ADAMS, 0F NEW LONDON, NEWl HAMPSHIRE. Letters' Patent No. 62,587, dated March 5, 1867.
IMPROVEMENTS IN BOOTS AND SHOES.
@be rlgshirle atmet in in tint Entert nteut mit mating gmt nt its samt '[O ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. ADAMS, of New London, in the lcounty of Merrimack, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful improvement in Boots'and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates principally to the heel of -a boot or shoe, and consists in making the heel of metal, and hollow, with its under plate constituting the treading surface secured to the main portion of the heel in such a manner as to be easily removed therefrom to :1l-low the heel to be secured to the sole of a boot or shoe by means of screws, nails, or other suitable fastening devices, and then secured thereto. In the aecompanying plate of drawings my improvement is illustrated- Figure 1 being a vertical section, taken in the plane of the line 9: x, iig. 2; and
Figure 2, a vertical section, taken in the plane of the line y y, fig. I.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the boot or shoe heel, which is made hollow, and of metal ofi any suitable kind. 'The upper side of the heel is made concave, so as to more perfectly t and conform to the surface of the sole' of the boot or shoe to which it is to be secured, and its bottom plate, C, constituting the treading surface, is independent ofthe main portieri of the heel, it restingupon and being supported by a centre post, D, of the same, to which it is secured by a screw, E, so as to be susceptible of detachment therefrom, and thus allow the heel, by means of screws, nails, or other proper fastening devices, passed through the holes a in the upper plate B of the heel, to be readily attached to the sole of the boot or shoe on which it is to be used or worn. From this metallic heel, upon its inner end, extends a metallic plate, H, of a suitable shape and sizeto i conform to the shank of the sole of a boot or shoe to which by screws or otherwise it is to be secured, the object of which iste strengthen and stiffen the shank, and thus obviate in a great measure the breaking down of the same from the wearing of the boot or shoe, as the case may be.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The parts A B, supporting postD, and shank H, made or cast in one piece, in combination with the independent bottom plate G, as and for the purpose specified.
, JOSEPH C. ADAMS. Witnesses:
