Description

No. 625,8I5. Patented May 30, I899.

ADVEBTISHIG SIGN.
(Appliution filed Apr. 1, was.)
(No Model.)
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M/THAWLEY, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
ADVERTISING-SIGN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,815, dated May 30, 1899'.
Application filed April ,1, 1898. Serial No- 676,120-l. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MAROY THAWLEY,of the city of Tor0nto,in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Sign's and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of this invention is to utilize the pole of a trolley-car for advertising purposes, and to provide the pole with an advertising device embracing in its construction a frame having a central partition on which may be painted or otherwise indicated suitable advertisements and guides at each side of the central partition to receive removable signs,
each sign having one or both sides printed with advertising matter, and to provide a connection between the advertising device and the trolley-pole which will suspend the advertising device from the pole and allow it to swing with the movements of the car or wind and accommodate itself to the top of the car when the trolley-pole has been lowered into a substantially horizontal position, as
hereinafter more fully set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of atrolley-pole and an advertising device suspended from the pole. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the advertising device with the removable signs held by the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view without the removable signs.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and drawings.
A represents the trolley-pole.
B B represent two bands encirclingv the trolley-pole at'a suitable distance apart and provided on the under side of the pole with an eye 0.
D represents a tubular frame for the advertising device, which is provided with eyes E E, interlocking with the eyes 0 0.
Depending from the center of the under side of the frame D is a partition F, and on each side of the partition F is printed, painted, or otherwise indicated suitable advertising matter in order that the partition F can serve as an advertising-sign when the advertising deviceis free of the other signs hereinafter described.
G G represent two sets of guides, one set located on each side of the partition F. Each set of guides G consists of an inwardly-bent piece of metal extending around the borders of the partition and forming with the partition a substantially U-shaped slide H, the slide II at the top end h of the partition being open to receive the removable signs.
I represents the removable signs, which may be of cardboard,'tin, or other suitable materiahcorrespondingin shape and size with the partition F and having printed on one or both sides suitable advertising matter. By printing advertisements on both sides of the signs I the signs can be reversed when it is so desired and the advertisements changed. By connecting the frame D to the pole A by means of the eyes '0 O and E E the sign can swing with the movement of the car and with the windand when the pole A is lowered into its horizontal position will lie flat on the top of the car and render no obstruction to the lowering of the pole. This is necessary when the car enters the car-shed or passes under a subway or lowered trolley-wire.
Different advertising matter can be printed on each side of the partition F and on each side of the signs I. The partition F and the signs I each having two sides, it will be understood that these different signs can be carried by the advertising device. By removing the signs the advertising matter on the partition is exposed to the view of the public. By inserting the signs the advertising matter on one side of each sign is exposed to the public and the advertising matter on the sides of the partition is covered. By reversing the signs the advertising matter on the opposite sides is exposed to view.
Having thus fully described my invention, what. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An advertising-sign for trolley-poles embracing in its construction a tubular bar provided with suspending mediums, a central partition depending from the middle of the under side of the frame and arranged to have advertisements painted on the whole of both of its side faces, two sets of guides, one located movable sigmpanels, substantially as speci on each side of thetpartition to hold removfied.
