JOHN C. DEAN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE DEAN BROTHERS STEAM PUMP WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
HYDRAULIC PUMP.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,291, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed August 31, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. DEAN, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful HydraulicPu mp; andldoherebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a construction of hydraulic pumps where a very high pressure is desired. It is especially adapted for use in duplex pumps, resulting in the attainment of great strength combined with unusual compactness. My invention, furthermore, permits the hydraulic chest and cylinders for the plungers to be made of forged steel.
One feature of my invention consists in drilling through a solid block of forged steel a conduit for the water or other fluid, with seats for the suction and discharge valves in the conduit, and a cylinder connected With said conduit, in which the plunger may opcrate.
Another feature of my invention consists in making the cylinders for the plunger separate from the said block and connecting them securely by drilling a recess into the block and threading it and screwing the externally-threaded end of the cylinder into it, a connecting-port being drilled from such recess for the cylinderinto the conduit through the block.
Another feature of my invention consists in combining a plurality of such pumping devices into one hydraulic steam-pump, as hereinafter appears. The full nature of my invention will appear from the accompanying drawings and the description and claims following. v
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the pump end of a hydraulic steam-pump containing the pumping machinery. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section thereof on the line A A of Fig. 6, the lefthalf being an end elevation of the block or hydraulic chest and connecting parts on the left side of the machine and the right half being a section through one of the conduits in the block on the right-hand side of said machine. Fig. 3
Serial No. 650,212. (No model.)
is a vertical longitudinal section on the line B B of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a central vertical cross-section on the line C O of Figs. 3 and 6. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the device with the right-hand end in vertical longitudinal section on the line D D of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the device with the right-hand end thereof broken away and with one part in horizontal longitudinal section on the line E E of Figs. 4 and 5.
In detail, 1 is the base-plate, upon which is mounted the base 2, that supports the block 3 or the hydraulic chest. A pair of these blocks is provided, one on each side.
The blocks 3 consist of forged steel provided with certain apertures and conduits drilled in it. In the first place I drill a vertical aperture 4 through the block. Then another vertical hole 5 is drilled from the upper side to a point about midway. These two apertures 4 and 5 are connected by a horizontal passage 6. The upper end of the aperture 4 is threaded to receive the valve-bolt 7 that contains the suction-valve 9. A suitable seat 10 for said suction-valve 9 is provided in the lower portion of the aperture 4 by means of bronzemetal or other suitable material. The upper part of the hole 5 is similarly threaded to receive the valve-bolt 11, that contains or holds the discharge-valve 12, formed similar to the suction-valve and resting on the seat 8. These features appear plainly in Fig. 2.
The conduit above described is duplicated in the block, as seen in Figs. 3 and 6, and is continued by a passage 13, the two extending diagonally from the pair of holes 5 until they meet in the passage 14, as shown in Fig. 6, which connects with the outlet 15.
The water or fluid is supplied to the conduit extending through the block 3, that has been described, through the conduits 16, that lead from the inlet 17, and through the frame 18, that connects the bases 2, as seen clearly in Fig. 2. There are two of the conduits 16 on each side, as is to be seen in Fig. 3.
The block 3 is drilled out on each side and threaded to receive the cylinder 19, as seen in Fig. 5. From the seat of said cylinder in the block an orifice connects the chamber in the cylinder with the horizontal portion 6 of the conduit through the block. On the outer end of said cylinder 19 a collar 20 is secured, as seen in Fig. 5, and it supports the guide rods 21 and 22. The rod 21 extends through said collar 20, while the rod 22 reciprocates in a groove on the upper side of said collar. A plunger 23 operates in the cylinder 19, extending through a suitable packing construction 29, and is supported in its outer end by a cross-head 25.
The cylinder 19 and plunger 23 are duplicated on each side of the block 3, while the guide- rods 21 and 22 extend for the full length of the device, as seen in Fig. 5, the rod 21 passing through the opening in the base 2 and the rod 22 extending above the block 3.
The collar 24, that corresponds with the collar 20, above described, is provided with opposit-ely-extending arms 30, that are secured bysuitable rods to the steam-cylinder. This connection is not shown, as it is immaterial to the explanation of this invention.
The combined construction, as is seen in Fig. 2, consists of a base portion with one inlet, but with four conduits leading therefrom, two to the right and two to the left of the two blocks 3, one on each side, provided with two sets of conduits connecting with the conduits 16 in the base portion and an outlet portion or block 26. This portion 26 consists of two horizontally-extending portions or arms 27 on each side that are secured to the blocks 3 by the bolts 28 and the upwardly-extending portion, as seen in Fig. 3. The conduits through this portion 26 consist of the conduits 1A and 15,heretofore mentioned. Itis seen that there are two pairs of plungers, each pair being secured so as to operate together and are driven from a duplex steam-cylinder (nothere shown) or any other suitable means. Vhile one of said plungers is drawing the fluid or water into the conduits 6 and water-cylinder on one side, the other plunger connected up with it is forcing the fluid or water out of the conduit 6 and water-cylinder on the other side. As the plunger is drawn out and the water is drawn into the conduit 6 and water-cylinder the valve 9 lifts, permittingits ingress, while the suction on the valve 12 prevents its egress. As the plunger is driven in and the water is being forced out of the conduit 6 and watercylinder the valve 12 lifts, while the pressure holds the valve 9 down. With this construction it is seen that it is possible to attain a very high pressure. The strain in the operation of pumping comes on the block 3. Since the dimensions of the conduits bear a very small ratio to the dimensions of the block and the said block is a solid one, excepting such conduits, it is obvious that the block will resist any possible pressure that can be brought to bear by any plunger. By screwing the cylinders 19 into the said blocks, after drilling a seat for them, it is possible to make the blocks and the cylinders, as has been stated, of forged steel, thereby acquiring the greatest possible strength.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hydraulic pump including a pair of blocks provided with conduits therethrough substantially as shown, a cylinder connected with each conduit, a valve in such conduit arranged on each side of the cylinder substantially as shown, and an intermediate block secured between the other two and provided with conduits leading from the conduits in the other block to a single outlet.
2. A hydraulic pump including a pair of blocks provided with conduits therethrough substantially as shown, a cylinder connected with each conduit, avalve in such conduit arranged on each side of the cylinder substantially as shown, an intermediate block secured between the other two and provided with conduits leading from the conduit in the other blocks to a single outlet, and a base upon which said pair of blocks is secured and which is provided with conduits leading from a single inlet to the conduits in such blocks.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of August, 1897.
JOHN G. DEAN.
