Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL M. THCMAS, CF DOWVAGIAC, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN' PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,637, dated July 24, 1866.
To all whom it may conce/M1, f
Be itknown that I, DANIEL M. THOMAS, of Dowagiac, Cass county, State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Compound Cylinder Force-Pump; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and'exact description thereof, reference Abeing had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is avert-ical section through the pump. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one side of the pump. Fig. 3 is a top view. Fig. 4 is a horizontall section taken in the plane indicated by the red line x in Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in a force-pump in which several main cylinders are employed having plungers working in them and communicating with the water in the well by means of side passages, which are arranged on each side of the main cylinders and above and be! low the same, as will be hereinafter described.
It also consists in providing the dischargepipe with a safety-valve in such manner that this valve will relieve the pump from undue strain.
It also consists in a novel pendulum-movement for operating the plungers of a forcepump which is constructed with chambers arranged as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to linderstand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawin gs, A represents the penstOck, which may be made of any suitable length and of two or more sections. B B
are two vertical chambers, having plungers B( B working in them, which plungers are solid and are operated by means of rods a a, which are arranged outside of the pen-stock and connected at their lower ends to cross-arms a at. These arms project through vertical slots b b in the pen-stock, and serve as guides for their respective pistons. The upper ends ofthe rods a a are connected to the ends of a vibrating frame, C, which is pivoted to a horizontal transverse shaft, c, which has its bearings in vertical standards EE, as shown in theA drawings.
The vertical chambers D D, on the sides of the chambers B B, communicate with their respective chambers by means of passages C C',
and the vertical chambers E E, at the ltop of the pen-stock and on the sides of their respecti ve chambers B B, communicate with these latter chambers by means of passages F F.
The chambers D D communicate with the water in the well at the base of the pen-stock A, and with an air-chamber, G, at the top of this pen-stock. Two valves, e c', opening upward, are applied to the chambers D D. The lower valves, c, allow water to be drawn into these chambers, but prevent it'from returning. The upper valves, e', prevent water which is forced into the chamber G from returning.
The chambers E E have valves e2 in them, which open downward and allow water to enter the chambers B B, but prevent it from escapin g through their ,passa-ges.
The pen-stock A is bored ont in the usual manner of making pen-stocks, and valve-tubes or tubular seats having valve-s applied to them are inserted into the chambers wherever required, as shown in Fig. l. If desirable, lateral openings ff may be made near the base of the pen-stock, communicating with the chambers D D below the valves therein.
Vhen one of the plungers B is caused t0 descend, water will be drawn into the three chambers on one side of the pen-stock, at the same time that water is being forced from corresponding chambers on the other side of the pen-stock into the chamber G, as shown in Fig. l. Thus while water is being drawn into the pen-stock by one plunger water will be forced into the chamber G by the other plunger. The water which is thus forced into said chamber will escape upward through a pipe, H, and into a service-pipe,H, that communicates with this pipe at a point which is below its upper end. The upper end of the vertical pipe H has a safety-valve,l h, applied to it, which opens upward and admits of the escape of water or air when there is an undue pressure or impulse given to the water. This valve may be held to its place by its own gravity, or by a spring when there is but an ordinary pressure, which spring should yield and allow the valve to open should the pressure or impulse be so great as would be liable to injure some part of the pump. Said valve h may be secured down in place when desired to employ that portion of the pipe H which is above pipe H to force a continuous stream. In this case an air-chamber is formed just below the valve h.
By providing upper and lower chambers leading into the main chambers I obtain a free indow of Wat-er, with a very compact pen-stock, into these main chambers above the pistons therein. v
The rock-shaft c has a rocking; segment scoured on one end, which segment J engages with the teeth of a segment, J, on a rock-shaft, K, that has a Working-beam keyed ou it. The ends ofthe Working-beam are connected by means of straps l l to cross-bars at the ends of the frame G, so that when the Workingbeam L is vibrated by means'ot' a pendulumlever, J 2, the frame C will also be vibrated and the plungers moved up and down. The straps or chains l l are used for lifting the ends of' the frame C alternately, which frame vibrates upon the oscillating,` shaft c, to which the pendulumdever is fastened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letn ters Patent, is-
l. The arrangement of the plunger-chamber B so as to communicate with the inductionchamber E at its upper end, and the side passage, D, which leads to the receiving-chamber Gr, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a force-pump which is constructed with upper and lower inloW- chambers leading to the main piston-chambers, the application of a safety-Valve, /"L, to the vertical discharge-pipe H, substantially as described.
3. The vibrating frame C, connected to the Working-beam L by means of flexible connections Z l, in combination with the segments J J and pendulum JZ, for operating the pumppistons, substantiall)v as described. A
