Leners Paten: No. 62,527, dared March 5, 1867'.
@In .Stintino-meurt in in tlgst Esteri tteut rmt making niet nl -tlgttnmc TO ALL WHM I 'i-MYUONCEBN:
Beit known that I, Josnrir F. C Hsn, of Litchfield, -in the conutyfof Montgomery, und State of Illinois, have made'certn-invnew and useful ImprovementslufStuing-Boxes" for Steam. Piston' and Valve' Rods;l and I do' hereby declarc'that the following is a full and clear description thereof` reference being had to the` accompnuying;l drawings, and to the letters ci`.1cfcrcnee marked thereon.
Figure lof the drawings is a longitudinal sectional elevation of one of the improved stullingboxes.
Figure 2 is n transverse section, tekenen the li'ne xx iirg. 1.
Figure 3 isa. similar view, `teken on the line :c :rv in iig. 1.
llignre Alis also a' transverse section', taken. on the lino x2 :c2 in fig. 1.
The nature of this -invention will 'be readily understood by reference to` the accompanying drawings and the following specifications. y
To enable those skilled 4in theA artto make and use my improved stuffing-box packing, I will proceed to vdescribe its constructionand operation.
The stuling-box A muy be attached to the cylinder 'or steam chest in the usual' manner, and the gland Awill bescrewed onto-it, as is customary, by means of bolts, (not shown.)l Within thc stufingbox is an annularl'y shaped packing case,`B,'sur1-ounding the pist-0n or valve rod C. This pitching 'case has small perforations a through its buck end,- as shown in figs. l and 2, for the admissionv of steam, that will pass through an 4annuler opei'iing,` 1/,k betweenjthe stuflngbox :md rod C. Within the packing ease B is an annular metallic packing, b, encircling the rod, and pressed on to it bythe pressure of steam on its periphery, so as to form as'team-tightjoi'nt between these'parts, ns hereinafter described. This packing ring is cut in two at for the purpose of enabling it to yield-readily to the vpressure of steam onits periphery, and. thus fit tightly to'its rod. The ring b is enclosed hynn annular casing, b, whiclhjis bored out or rebated on one side eecen'trically, ns' shown in lig. 4, for `thereceptionvol` the saidpnckin'g ring .'j When thpse two-parts. are placed together, as in use, there will be formed on one uside of and between thema crescent cavity, e,as vfully shown in iig. 4. Within this cavity wll'be inserted a. spring, c', which willpress the peeking .hard down vupon theV rod on the opposite side from the break' bl, and willdraw the casinguing b2 up tightly to the rod opposite the said opening in the' packing, that is, on the samev side ofthe rod as the said opening-bl. '.lheA object of-this construction is to' cause the easing ring b to'set up'tightly to the rod, Tand form the packing for it at that point where the openingat bl would otherwise allo-w steam to passthrough the said" opening. The stcn'mwhich pcsses from the cylinder or steam chest, as the onse maybe, through the annular opening a around the rod, and thence through the' perforutions a, will enter the cavity c, where Vits expanding -force/will vact upon the Apecking 'bring b' to force 'it down upon the rod and upon the casing'la", -to raise it up o`r of 'that side of the rod,- and jdrawiit up tightly te the other side at the point bl. Thus the steam pressurewill act upon the peeking b' b" in 'such amanner asl to causethese two packing rings, in combination with each other, to form a perfeetlyti'ght l stennzn joint between, themselves and the rod C. In order to preventnny steam that may force its'wny throughbetween the vcasing B and the stuilng-box A, I place two rings D D around the'rod Cbetweenrtlie`ca.se.-]3 and the glandvzl. The two contiguous edges of these rings are bevelled off so es to receive a hemp pecking', cl, which, as the gland isA screwed down upon the ring D', willbe. expelled outwardly sons to renderI perfectly tight the annular joint between the said hemp packing nud the stungrbox'. i As' thcrcis no wear upon this hemp packing, it will last a long time. The rod C may be lubricated through the'orifice g-in the gland.
There may be one or more of the rings 6, Constructed on the sano principle as that herein described. The
rings b and 'should hc fitted loosely into the casing B, but the ljoint between the ring 6* and-B should be con structed steam-tight.
Having described my invention, what I claim, is-
The packing ring I), and its enclosing' casing 62, when constructed substantially as and for the purposes setforth.
2., The combination and arrangement ofthe peeking rings b and b2, and the spring c', substantially as set forth. l l
3. The packingrings b Zz, in combination with enclosed perforated casing B, substantially as set forth. 4. The packing rings D D', when'constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
