Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
WILLIAM ADAMSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAND, EMERY, AND OTHER LIKE PAPER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 62,518., dated March 5, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ADAMSON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Sand, Emery, and other like Paper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of sand-paper the back of which is saturated with a solution of gumelast-ic or gutta -pe rcha in naphtha or other equivalent solvent, so that the paper may be rendered more tough, elastic, and at the same time water-proof. Ordinary sand or emery paper has been heretofore made by coating strong Manila paper with glue, and spreadin g evenlyover the glued surface sand, ground quartz, glass, or emery, which adheres firmly to the paper after the glue is dry. The Manila paper generally used, although tough, is somewhat brittle, especially after the granulated material has been glued to it; so, moreover, when exposed, the paper readily absorbs moisture, which communicated to the glue,
the latter consequently failing as a medium for properly securing the granulated material to the paper.
In order to obviate this difficulty, I spread on the back of the paper a thin solution of gum-elastic or gutta-percha and naphtha, or other equivalent solvent, and when it penetrates the paper to the glued surface of the same, renders the paper water-proof, and more tough and elastic.
I claim as my invention and desire to secureby Letters Patent- Sand or emery paper saturated with a solution of gum-elastic or gutta-percha and naphtha, or other equivalent solvent, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. ADAMSON.
