UNITED STATES LAWVRENCE F. RYAN,
PATENT ()FFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,870, dated May 9, 1899.
V Application filed July 20,1898. Serial No. 686,430. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE F. RYAN, of
New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved I a simple device for locking a window either in an open, partially open, or in a closed position and to provide a means whereby when the window-sashes are locked together the lockin g device cannot be tampered with from the outside.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjusting and regulating device for windows capable of .ready application to window-sashes and of convenient and expeditious manipulation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
vReference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a partial inside view of an upperand a lower sash and a portion of the window-frame, illustrating the application of the improved devices. Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, A represents an upper sash, B a lower sash, and O a side, of the window-frame. At one or both sides of the upper sash, upon its inner face, a plate 10 is secured, being preferably countersunk in the side rail of the sash, and a similar plate 11 is correspondingly placed upon the lower sash B. These plates may be of any desired length, and in each plate one or more slots 12 are produced, preferably of substantially L form, the lower plate needing but one slot,
while the plates on the upper sashes are preferably provided with a number of them. The short member a of the slots 12 extends below the lower end of the longer member a, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The preferred form of locking and adj usting device is that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and designated by the reference-letter D. This locking device comprises a substantially triangular' body, being composed of a vertical back member 13, a horizontal bottom member 14, and an inclined front member 15, and
an arm 15 is projected vertically downward from the lower end of the inclined front member 15 of the body, and upon the inner face of the lower portion of this pendent arm 15 and at the upper inner. portion of the body of the device and the lower end of the arm 15 substantially T-shaped lugs 16 are formed, being either made integral with the parts to which they are attached or secured thereto in any approved manner, and in order to prevent the locking device D from having lateral movement a cross-bar 17 is formed at the bottom, extending beyond its sides, as shown also in Figs 1 and 2.
In applying the device the inner vertical member of the body 13 is brought to an engagement with the inner face of the side rail of the top sash. The lower member 14: of the body rests upon the top rail of the bottom sash and partly on the bottom rail of the top sash, as shown in Fig. 2, while the pendent arm 15 will engage with the inner face of the side rail of the bottom sash. The lugs 16 are entered in the vertical members of the slot 12 in the plate of the lower sash and a slot in the plate of the upper sash. The device is then moved laterally until the necks of the T-lugs enter and drop in the shorter members a of the aforesaid slots, asshown in Fig. 2. In this manner it will be observed that the two sashes will be locked together and that they maybe locked in either an open or in a partially-open or in a completely-closed 1 position and that it will be impossible for any person working'from the outside to dislodge .the devices.
to the front surface of the upper sash, andan' arm extended from the inclined side of the body beyond the adjacent side thereof and at right angles to the same, said arm being provided with means whereby it maybe locked to the front surface of the lower sash, as set forth.-
2. In a Window lock and regulating device, plates adapted for attachment to Windowsashes, the said plates being provided with substantially L-shaped openings, and a locking-bracket having a substantially triangular body and an arm pendent therefrom, the body and the arm of the bracket being provided with substantially T-shaped lugs adapted to enter the openings in the said plates, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a Window lock and regulating device, plates adapted for attachment to the windowsashes, the said plates being provided with substantially L-shaped openings, the smaller members of the openings extending below the longer members, and a locking-bracket comprising a substantially triangular body, and an arm pendent from the lower portion thereof, the arm of the body being provided with lugs shaped to enter the openings in the aforesaid plates, as and for the purpose specified. 4. In a Window lock and regulating device, a locking-bracket formed with a body and arm arranged respectively for engagement with the upper and lower sashes, said body being provided at its bottom with a cross-bar extending beyond its sides, as and for the purpose set forth.
