To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB PFEIFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nipples for Nursing-Bottles; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description o he invention, which will enable others Skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention is an improvement in the style of nipple for nursing-bottles patented to Charles S. Heller on the 4th day of May, 1897, No. 582,159. In the original invention as represented in the said patent the stem alone occupied the center of the dome, and the hole or opening for the outlet of the milk was at one side thereof and OK the center of nipple but in that construction I found that the child was liable to crimp or compress the head of the nipple between its gums or teeth in such way as to crowd the hole against the base of the stem and efiectually out OK the ilow of milk. Especially was this the case when the outlet-hole came above or below rather than at the side as the nipple was taken into the mouth. To remedy this defect-,1 have made an improvement in the said nipple, by which the collapsing of the head by the child cannot possibly close the outlet-orifice, all substantially as shown and described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved nipple. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on a line corresponding to 2 2, Fig. .1, as the nipple is distended; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the same line, showing the head of the nipple collapsed.

A represents the nipple proper, which may have the general shape or outline about as shown here or any other preferred shape and is made of rubber, as usual.

B is a stem which projects from the center of the head or dome of the nipple inward a greater or less distance, but is designed in any event to pass well into or through the neck (t, whereby the possible closing of the nipple in the neck by the child is prevented.

Now in order that the head a of the nipple may not be collapsed or compressed so as to close the outlet orifice or passage 2 I have located the said orifice directly in the center of the nipple-head and have formed a channel or groove b in the upper part of the stem B, longitudinally thereof and extending into the center of the nipple-head, so as to be brought into open communication with the orifice 2. This brings the orifice within the area of the base of the stem 13, where it is protected by the channel b. With this construction it follows that though the child may collapse the head of the nipple as formerly it cannot close the outlet-orifice by so doing, because if the rubber be compressed at this point so as to bear against the side of the base of the stem B a passage will still he left open for the outflow of milk through the channel b. This then overcomes the objection of frequent closure of the orifice 2 as it occurred in the old construction and insures a steady flow of milk under all circumstances.

An internal annular rib c is formed about the dome of the nipple apart from the stem B, as in the old construction.

I have shown and described the orifice 2 as directly in the center of the dome or head of the nipple; but obviously it might be somewhat olf the center, and if it be matched with a channel or passage corresponding in func-' tion to channel b it would serve exactly the same purpose as a central orifice and of course be within the spirit and scope of the invention and claim. One way of doing this would be by making the channel I) of less depth and possibly narrower in cross-section, so as to insure an open passage when the nipple is compressed in the head even as now.

What I claim is I A nipple fornursing-bottles having an outlet-orifice through its dome and anarrowed portion about midway the length of the nipple, and a stem integral with the dome and having its free end extending through said narrowed portion and provided with a longitudinal channel running to its base and in open communication with the said outlet-orifice, substantially as described.
