Description

@uiten tatts @stent @ffice IMPROVED KNIFE AND SGISSGRS SHARPNER.
' dit Ytbehnle referat tu it tlgrsc tfttrrs fslzitsnt mit mating pitt tf tlg samt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNz- Be it known that I, MATTHEW T. CHAPMAN, ofthe city of Galeshurg,in the county ct Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented a new andrimproved combined Knife and Scissors Sharpener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the constructioirand operation ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a rear side View of my improved combined knife and scissors Sharpener'.
Figures 2, 3, and 4 are front side views otl the saine, showing the dierent positions of the sharpening instrument.
Figure 5, a top view.
Like lettersin the different figures of'thc drawings indicate like parts.
vMy invention relates to the construction of a block of wood or metal, having'a semicircular or other suitable shaped top, and provided with an angular open-end metallic box, fitting into an opening made from the top and centre thereof; the side of said block having a peculiar-shaped steelplate attached thereto, and made adjustable by means? of a pivot-headed screw, whereby the'said plate may be moved in such positions as occasion may require for the sharpening of knives and right or left-handed scissors.
The construction and operation are as follows: A is the block of wood, with a semicircular-shaped top. The block may he of metal if desired. An opening is made down from the centre and top of the block, of a shape and size suitable to receive the angular. open-end metallic box a. (See clearly iig. l.) The box in this instance is madefof copper. It may be of some other soft metal, of such amature as will not likely injure the arm of the scissors or knife in drawing the same against its sides across the steel plate or sharpeningr instrument. B, the steel plate, the shape of which may be seen much better in igs. 2, 3, and 4' tlran can be described. It is made of an angular or tapering format onelend, and diminished to a straight form at the other end. The edges of the angles and straight part of the plate are chamfered oil, and the tempered to a greater hardness than the edges of a knife or the arms ofa pair of scissors, so as to withstand the friction to which the edges of the plate will be subjected in the drawing of the knife or scissors'across the saine in the operation of sharpening. The plate is fastened to, the block, in the centre of it and of the plate, by a pivot-headed screw, b. It can be tightened or loosened as may be required for an easy adjustable movement of the plate.
Operation: In the sharpening of aknii'e, where a short angle is required, the position of the plate is indicated in tig. 2, with the angular or tapering part directly opposite the open-end angular copper box. The knife is placed with its edge in eithcrvoft` the apexes ofthe two angles thus formed by Lthe relative position ofthe plate with the box, and drawn across the edges of the plate several times, until sharpened. Where a very ine angle is required, the position of thc plate is indicated in lig. 3; the straight part of the plate being directly oppo-V site to the open end of the box the knife undergoes the saine operation as above. If it is desired to sharpen right-handed scissors, the position of the plate is indicated in g. 4. The arm ofthe scissors is placed with its bevelled edge resting on the edge oi' the plate, 'and the dat side of the arm against the side of the box. In this position it is drawn several times vacross the edges of the plate until it is ascertained to be sufficiently sharp. The same operation attends the other arm. In the sharpening of left-handed scissors the position of the plate is exactly reversed. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sharpener-plateB,'having a V-shaped end, terminating with parallel edges, and thence angularly and inwardly with parallel edges again, and operating in combination with the angular open metallic box a, as constructed in the block Af substantially in the manner and forl tho purpose as herein described.
