SAFETY LOCKING DEVICE FOR GUNS.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,680, dated May 9, 1899.
Application filed December 31,1897. Serial No. 665,060. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL POHLIT, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Essen, Germany, have invented new and usefulImprovements in or Connected with Safety Locking Devices for Guns with lVedge-Type Breech- Closing Mechanism, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Germany, No. 97, 930, dated February 26, 1897; in Austria, No. 47/5,066, dated November 27, 1897; in France, No. 270,567, dated September 18, 1897; in Belgium,No. 180,713, datedSeptembet-18,1897; in Italy,Reg.Gen.,XXXIII,4L6,195, Reg. Att., X0, 170, dated December 31, 1897; in Spain, No. 21,564:, dated November 16,1897; in Sweden, No. 8,909, dated October 23, 1897; in Norway, No. 6,154., dated October 29, 1897; in Switzerland, No. 15,282, dated October 21, 1897, and in England, No. 26,990, dated November 18, 1897,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to improvements in horizontal wed ge-fermetures of guns in which the hammer is cocked by a doublearmed cocking-lever actuated by the lockscrew when the latter is turned for unlocking the fermeture.
The invention consists in a safety device which at the same time prevents opening of the breech and firing.
The nature of myinvention will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side View of the breech-block locked, but not secured. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, locked and hammer cocked. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1, hammer cocked. Fig. 4 is a side view of the breech locked and secured. Fig. 5 ,is ahorizontal section on the line 5 5, Fig. 4, fermeture locked and secured, hammer held at rest. Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line 6 6, Fig. 1, seen from the left. Figs. 7 to 11 are detail views.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, A is the breech-wedge; G, the lock-screw, with the handle K and flange w; J, the hammer; H, the hammer-spring;
B, the cocking-lever; L, the trigger; M, the sear, and N the sear-spring.
The hammer is cockedin. the usual manner-that is, in unlocking the breech-block an inclined surface of the lock-screw acts against a correspondingly-formed surface of the cocking-lever 13, Figs. 1 and 2. The gun is also fired in the usual manner by means of the trigger L, which, being turned on the bolt h, causes its lugt' to act against the flange k of the sear M so as to trip the cocking-lever.
F is a block inserted into the breech-block and held therein by the pivot-bolt h of the trigger, Figs. 1, 2, and 3. This block contains the sear M, with its spring N, and is also provided with a bore for the safety device, which latter consists of a bolt D with a semicylindrical extension (I, Fig. 10, of a han= dle C, Fig. 11, attached to this bolt, and of a spring E, Figs. 6 and 9. These parts are as sembled in the following manner: The block F being removed from the breech-wedge, the spring E is first inserted into the bore of the block F, provided for the reception of the safety device, so as to bear against a shoulder at the outer end. The bolt D is then inserted and pressed into the bore far enough that the socket 1. of the handle C can be passed over the square end of the bolt D and connected therewith by a pin. The block F, containing the scar and safety device, is then again inserted into the breech-wedge M and securedv therein by the bolt h.
On the safety-handle C there is a cylindrical shank c, and the breech-wedge has two rests o and to, Figs. 1 and 4:, into either of which the shank 0 may be passed. WVhen the handle 0 is in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the shank c is within the rest o,bearing at the same time against a nose 6, projecting from the flange to of the lock-screw G, thereby making it impossible to turn the breech-screw for unlocking the block. Furthermore, in this position of the handle the semicylindrical extension d of the bolt D is opposite a lug a of the cocking-lever B, so that when the cooked hammer, Fig. 2, is released by pulling the trigger it cannot fiy farther forward than to the position shown in Fig. 5, the firing-point being held a short distance from the percussion-cap. Consequently From the position Fig. 1 (firing position) the safety-handle is changed to the position Fig. 4, (safety position,) and vice versa, by pulling the handle until the shank c is out of its socket and then turning the handle to allow the shank c to snap into the other socket,
I That I claim as new is 1. In a horizontal wedge-fermeture of guns, the combination with the breech-wedge, the lock-screw, the hammer, the cocking-lever and the trigger, of a safety device rotatably secured within the breech-wedge, a lug thereon engaging recesses in the Wedge, whereby in one of its positions it presents an obstacle to the motion of the lock-screw and also an obstacle to the motion of the cocking-lever, While in the other position both the lock-screw and the cocking-lever are released, substantially as described.
2. In a horizontal Wedge-fermetu re of guns, the combination with the breech-wedge, the lock-screw, the hammer, the cocking-lever and the trigger, of a safety device rotatably secured Within the wedge, a lug thereon engaging recesses in the wedge, whereby in one of its positions it presents an obstacle to the motion of the lock-screw, and also an obstacle to further motion of the cocking-lever, when the firing-point of the hammer is a short distance from the percussion-cap; while in the other position, both the lock-screw and the cocking-lever are released, substantially as described.-
3. In a horizontal wedge-fermeture of guns, the combination with the breech-wedge A, the lock-screw G, the hammer H, the cockin g-lever B with a lug a, and the trigger L, of
a safety spring-bolt D inserted into the breechwedge; said safety-bolt being provided with.
a projection d; a-handle O, and a shank 0 adapted to be inserted into and held within one or the other of rests u and 0; in the breechwedge; the shank 0, when within the rest 1, bearing against a nose 6 on the flange w of the lock-screw G, so as to prevent opening of the breech, while, at the same time, the projection d of the safety-bolt D is opposite the lug a on the cocking-lever B, and limits the forward motion of the hammer as desired, substantially as and for the purpose specified. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL POHLIT. \Vitnesses:
WILLIAM ESSENWEIN, ADOLF REIvEs.
