JAMES A. BURDEN, oF TROY, NEW YORK.
MACHINE F-OR MAKING HORSESHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,622, dated May 9, 1899.
Application filed March 3, 1898. Serial No. 672,423. (No model.) l
T0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES A. BURDEN, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer', and State of New York, have invented new and useful lmprovem ents in Machines for Making Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention relates to machines for making horseshoes, and more particularly to improvements upon the machine designed for this purpose which is described and shown in Letters Patent N o. 524,307, granted to me August 14, 1894, and in which a wheel provided with peripherally-located dies is employed and operated to move with alternating periods of motion and rest, during each of which periods of rest a blank is bent around one of the die-frogs of the die-wheel and at a succeeding period of rest is top-swaged and has its heel ends compressed. In the machine described in the before-named Letters Patent and to which my invention herein shown is illustrated as applied a projecting bar isoperated to enter a recess formed in the toe end of each of the die-frogs, with the outer face of this bar at its entering end projecting beyond the toe end of the frog, so that when a blank is bent thereon it will at its toe end be in ad- Vance of the frog, and thus leave a space between the inner edge of the bent blank and the toe end of the frog, wherein the metal subsequently displaced laterally by top-Swaging or concaving the shoe may enter, and so prevent the formation of aiin' thereat, my improvement upon the said projector being to combine with it a bar to bear directly upon the outer face of the blank when the latter is resting on the entered blank-projector and being bent thereon to hold the blank firmly in place.
My invention also relates to a means whereby the entered blank will be adapted to automatically adj ust itself with uniformity to the operation of the frog-dies and the benders with accuracy.
Accompanying this specification to form a part of it there are three plates of drawings, containing ten figures, illustrating the application of my invention, with the same designation of parts by letterreference used in all of them.
Of the illustrations, Figure l is a perspective of a horseshoe-machine with my improve-l ments shown as applied thereto and with that side of the machine at which the blanks are entered shown as facing the View. Fig. 2 is a perspective of that, part of the machine whereat the blank is entered to be acted upon, showin g also part of the die-wheel and benders and with the combined blank-projector and blank-holder omitted. Fig. 3 shows in side elevation part of the die-Wheel, one of the frog-dies, with the blank-projector and combined blank-holder, shown as having entered the recess formed in the toe end of one of the die-frogs and the blank-holder as bearing on the outer face of the blank, with that part of the die-wheelshaft which is shown being illustrated in cross-section. Fig. 4 is an end View of the combined blank-projector and blankholder and the stock in which it is mounted, with that end of the apparatus which engages with the blank shown as facing the view. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the lihe oc' of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective of the bar forming the blank-holder and part of the blank-projector shown as detached from the stock in which it is mounted. Fig. 7 is a top view of the blankprojector, shown as detached. Fig. 8 is a View of the under side of the blank-projector.
Fig. 9 is an elevation of one of the dies, with a blank shown as resting on the blank-proj ector, with the latter shown insection, taken on the line x2 .r2 ofFig. 5. Fig. 10 shows the position of the blank after having been bent around the frog, in advance of the toe end of the latter, and with the blank-projector and combined blank-.holder removed.
The several parts of 'the apparatus t'nus illustrated are designated by letter reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:
The letters F designate the frame or housing of the machine and in Which the working parts are mounted.
The letter J designates the main drivingshaft, which is actuated by a pulley. (Not shown.) J j The letters Gr2 designate a gear-wheel mounted on the driving-shaft, and J 2 another shaft, on which there is mounted the gear-Wheel Gr', with the latter arranged to mesh into the gearwheel Gr2 on the driving-shaft to receive power therefrom. l.
The letters G3 designate beveled gears, of
IOO
which there is one at each side of the machine mounted upon the driving-shaft J', and the' letters G4 designate another beveled gearwheel at each side of the machine, each of which is provided with a vertical shaft and arranged to mesh into the beveled gear-Wheel G2 at each end of the driving-shaft to thereat operate said Vertical shafts to actuate a side swager, which is not shown.
The letters O O designate benders, each of which is pivoted to an oscillating frame part, which latter is operated by the cams O3 on the shaft J2. Each of these benders at its lower end is provided with a rollerrgand is arranged to run in a curved guide, as will be more fully detailed hereinafter.
The letter J1 designates the die-wheel shaft, and W the die-wheel.
The letter R designates a double ratchetwheel arranged on the outer end 104 of the diewheel shaft where extended through and beyond its bearing in the machine-housing.
The letter V designates a pawl-holder arranged eccentrically on the shaft J by which the ratchet-wheel is actuated to move the diewheel shaft with intermittent periods of motion and rest.
The letters D designate the frog-dies, which are arranged on the flat faces cl2 of the diewheel and of which but one is shown at Fig. 3. These f rog-dies are shown as detached from the die-wheel at Figs. 9 and 10 and as mounted on the flat faces of the die-wheel at Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
The letters B designate a blank in a position to be bent, and B2 a blank after having been bent around one of the frogs (Z2 by the operation of the benders O O, with the blank when bent resting upon the flat surface d3 ot' the die proper where encircling the sides d5 of the frog and its toe end d4.
The letter N designates an angular recess 'which is formed in the toe end of the die-frogs d2, and this recess is'cut out of the frog at its toe end to extend through the latter to the t'op of the die-plate d3, all of the before-named parts being ot' the same construction that is as shown at Figs. 4, 5, and 6.
shown in the before-named Letters Patent No. 524,307. v
The letter P designates the combined blank projectorand holder, constructed with the angularly-formed upper surface p2, the bottom angularly-formed surface p2, and the vertical surface p4, which latter is upwardly projected from the top of the angularly-formed top p2, This combined blank projector and holderis operated to have the bottom angular face p2 adapted to enter the angular recess N, formed in each of the die-frogs, as they come to a period ot' rest, with the upper angular face p2 projecting beyond the toe end ofthe die-frog, so that when a blank is entered it will rest on the angular top p2 of the projector, while the vertical face p4 will bear against the ou ter face of the blank to hold the latter firmly in place while being bent. When the blank is thus bent, so that Vat the toe end of the die the blank is in advance of the frog, there is a space C4, having a crescent form, between the 7o toe end of the frog and the bent blank, into which space when the shoe is concaved or swaged on top the metal displaced laterally will enter this space, and thus prevent the forming of a iin thereat. blank projector and holder is mounted on the inner end and bottom o f the stock S, which latter is recessed at e2 on its under side to receive it, and it isproduced by means of a plate M, having formed thereon at each of 8o its ends the angularprojection p2, adapted to enter the recess N, formed in the die-frog, and the plate I, made with the opening t2 at each of its ends, the bolts Z2 b connecting the bottom plate M and the intermediatelyplaced plate I with the stock, the plates M and I being made alike at both` ends, so as to make them each reversible.
The letter L designates an L-form bar having formed on its horizontal part Z2 the an- 9o gular projection p2 and the Vertical blankholder surface p4,-upwardly projected from the angular projection p2. This bar L is provided with beveled sides, whereby it may be entered in a vertically-arranged keying-recess formed in the inner end of the stock, so as to rest on the top ot' the plate M at m2.
To operate the combined blank holder and projector P, the following mechanism is used:
The letter A designates an arm which at its roo thereat provided with a nut n2, threaded onto 1 1c said bolt. The stock S is journaled onto the bracket H at h2 by means of the pintle-shaft h3 and is arranged to rest upon the offset c2 of the bracket when the. combined blank projector and holder is by the arm A'operated 115 to move inwardly to engage with the die-frog and blank. The rock-shaft S is provided with bearings b in the offset-brackets bu on the machine frame or housing, and at its end` opposite to that at which the bar A connects 12o with this rock-shaft the latter is provided with a crank-arm A6, which at its upper end v is provided with a roller arranged to engage with the cam-Wheel a8 on the shaft J2. When the arm A actuates the combined blank pro- 12 5 jector and holder to move inwardly, it so operates it while the die-wheel is at one of its periods of rest, with the angular projection p3 entering the recess N, formed in the die-frog,
which is in position to be operated upon, with 13o the angular projection p2 extending beyond the toe end of the die-frog, and the holder part p4 in position to have a blank pass down behind it to have the blank rest on the pro- This combined 75 The letter H designates a bracket Vjection p2 betorethe combined blank pro-1 jector and holder has completed its inward movement, which when completed causes the holder-surface p4 to engage with the outer face of the entered blank, so as to hold itsecurely against the'die-face atthe toe end of the frog while the blank is being bent. As soon as the bending is completed and the wheel commences to move, the stock S, resting upon the oset a2, is free to rise when being drawn outwardly and to again descend on the offset to be operated upon in the same manner when a succeeding die comes into position with the lot' each of the bars r2, with each of the latter connected to an offset-ear e4, formed on the barb, each adjustabl y connected to the housing at e5. These disks O2 are each free to rotate on the rods r2, on which they are placed between the nut n2 on theirinner end and the nut n4 on the rod r2 outside of the disk.
The letter T2 designates a stop which is of a disk form and which is rigidly connected to the inner end of the bar t2, which is threaded into the ear t2 and adj ustably secured thereon by the jam-nut 015. The function of these disks O2 and the stop T2 is to furnish an automatically-adjusting means for the proper placing of the blank, so as to insure the production of uniform work, and this result is accomplished by having the entering end of the' blank abut against the vertical face of the stop T2 and with the blank between its ends placed upon thedisk-wheels O2 O2, which by their adjusting rotation will guide the blank in its descent edgewise to rest centrally on the inwardly-movin g projector P when en-4 tering the recess N, with the ends of the blank resting upon the teats 7c, of which there is one form ed on the outer face of each of the plates 7a2, projected outwardly from each of the bender-arms A2 and in front of where the latterare projected downwardly below the benders proper to run in the curved guideways g5, the blank being placed upon the projector be-v fore having completed its inward movement and before the holder part p4 of the projector has engaged with the blank tohold it While being bent.
The benders O O at their upper ends are pivotally mounted in a frame part F2, which latter at its lower end f5 is journaled on a horizontal shaft f, with the frame part F2 op, erated to be oscillated on its journaled connection by the cams O2 O3 and by which movement ofsaid frame part the benders pivoted thereto are together operated to descend and rise, with their lower ends moving in a curved direction by the guides g5. These benders, as well as the stop T2, have the same construction thatis shown in said Letters Patent No. 524,307, and apart from their being a part of a new combination I make no claim therefor herein. As the adjusting disk-wheels O2 O2 can be used in connection with the stop T2 to perform useful functions, I do not limit my invention to their combination with the combined blank-projector and blank-holder with which I herein illustrate them as arranged to coperate.
I am aware that it is not new to employ a blank-holder and blank-projector separately constructed and' separately operated, my improvement being limited to forming and operating them connectedly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters lEat-4 1. The combination with a wheel provided n at rest, so as to project beyond lthe toe end ofV the frog, and having va holder part integrally formed with said projector part, and at right angles thereto, and constructed to vmove with it,'and bear against the outer face of the blank being bent upon the projector part, the die, and the frog, substantially as shown and described. Y
i 2. The combination with awheel provided with frog-form dies on its peripheral face, each of the frogs having a recess formed in the toe end; said wheel being actuated to rotate with alternating periods of motion and rest; of a blank-projector actuated to enter the recess of each of the frogs in vsuccession when at rest, so as to extend beyond the toe end of the frog, and having formed integrally with said projector and at right angles thereto a holder-bar operated to move with said projector, and arranged to bear on-the outer face of the horseshoe-blank while being bent; and benders moving in guides and operated to engage with the entered blank to bend the same around the frog in which the projector is entered while the blank is being held in position on the die-face by the holder, substan- -tially as shown and described.

IIO
' ends abutting against said stop will by the action of gravity and the rotation of said disk Wheels be carried downwardly to have its center rest upon the toe end of the frog; and benders operated to engage with the blank so placed to bend it around said frog-form die substantially as shown and described.
- 4. The combination with a Wheel having frog-form diesen its peripheral face, with the frog of each of said dies provided With a recess in its toe end, said Wheel being actuated to rotateV with alternating periods of motion and rest, of a blank projector and holder actuated to move inwardly to enter the recess of the adjacent frog, when at rest, and to bear upon a blank When the latter is being bent on said projector and frog; a stop at one side of said die-wheel; a disk Wheel at neach side of said die-wheel arranged to project beyond the perimeter of the latter with the rims of said disk Wheels in parallel horizontal alinement; whereby a blank placed on said disk Wheels Will by the adjusting rotation of the latter be deposited upon the recess-entering blank-projector between the die-face and the blank-holder, before the latter has reached the limit of its inward movement; and benders actuated to bend the blank so entered upon the projector and frog substantially as shown and described. A
