NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
AARON I. STORRS, OF OWEGO, NEW YORK.
MICA CHllVlNEY FOR GAS-LAIVIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,568, dated May 9, 1899.
Application filed Nvember 1 9 1 8 9 7. Serial No. 6 5 9 j 1 80. (No model.)
To LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON P. STORES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owego, Tioga county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mica Chimneys for Gas-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the mica chimneys used with the so-called Velsbach or other incandescent gas-lamp, its vobject being to provide an improved construction thereof; and it consists in the features hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure lis an illustration of my improved chimney shown in place upon the lamp, partly broken away the better to show the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a detail of one of the metal strips for holding the abutted 'edges of the mica sections with one of the shade-holder clips in- Fig. 3 is a crosssectional'detail of the chimney, showing the alining and shade-holder clips and Fig. .tis an enlarged detail of the blank of one of the metal stripsi showing the slots therein for the clips.
In the drawings, A represents the lampburner; 2, the standards of the gallery or shade-holder; 3, the annular rib connecting the standards near their top.
Bis the chimney, cylindrical in form, made up of rectangular mica sections 4, preferably three in number, connected together by sheet-metal strips 5, folded upon themselves longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 3, S-shaped in cross-section, the end or binding strips G protecting the edges-of the mica at the ends of the chimney 2. The adjacent edges of the mica sections-enter these folds and are firmly held by the closing of the folds. The chimney is of such size as to slip outside of the gallery and be held in position by it. One of the longitudinal strips 5 is provided with Va slot 7, in which is placed the sheet-metal clip 8, the ends of which are folded toward each other, so as to project toward the center of the chimney, and are adapted to engage one of the standards 2 of thegallery, and thereby hold the strips 5 in alinement or coincidence with the standards to prevent the casting o f separate shadows. Each of the strips 5 which serves to anchor or secure the blank in place in the strip before folding.
All of the clips are left fiat or extended until the chimney is to be fitted to the lamp for convenience in handling and shipment. Then the ends of the clips are folded toward each other, as shown in Fig. 3. The clips l0 then serve as holders or supports for the shade 12, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, the neck portion of theshade standing in the same place as the ring 3, where the shadow of the latter is least objectionable. The concave curve of the clips fitto the curvature of the shade and serve to enter and seat it firmly.
I claim-- l. As an article of manufacture, a lampchimney made up of sections of mica united by longitudinal metal strips engaging the meeting edges of the sections, and having sheet-metal clips inserted-through and held in said strips upon the exterior of the chimney with the ends projecting to serve as shade` supports. 2. In alamp of the class described, the conibination with the gallery having a series of standards, and the lamp-shade, of the mica chimney fitted to the exterior of said gallery and having a series of longitudinal metal strips in number and relative position corresponding to the gallery-standards, a sheetmetal clip inserted through and held in one of said strips on the inner wall of the chimney and adapted to engage a gallery-standard to maintain coincidence of said strips and standards and sheet-metal clips similarly inserted through and held in said strips on the outer wall of the chimney conformed to support and center said shade. 1
Witness my hand this 15th day of November, 1897. v
AARON P. STORRS. Witnesses:
