To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER F. CLERC, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Putting Irons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to puffing-irons or devices forironing out the tucks, puffs,orsleeves of garments which cannot be readily operated upon by an ordinary sad-iron, and which devices comprise in their structure a suitable base, a vertical tube, a vertically-movable standard having the upper end beveled and made angular, and a removable and replaceable ironing-head,approximately egg-shaped, With a vertical angular and tapering recess or hole in its lower side, which is flattened or made plane-surfaced and formed with a horizontal recess in its butt-end to receive a rod or other instrument by which it may be placed on and removed from said standard.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a central Vertical section of a puffing-iron constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the ironing-head.

In the said drawings the reference-letter A designates a base, of any suitable material, formed with a central socket in which is seated a vertical tube B, or the said tube may be formed integral with said base, if desired. Fitting in said tube is a vertically movable or adjustable metallic rod or standard D, the upper end of which is made angular and beveled and engages in a corresponding recess in an ironing -head hereinafter described. The letter C designates a thumb-screw passing through a screw-threaded aperture in said tube and bearing against the standard to hold it in its adjusted position.

The letter E designates a metallic ironinghead, approximately egg-shaped and having its lower side flattened or made plane-surfaced, so that it will rest squarely on a stove or other heater on which the head is placed to be heated. Formed in said flattened side is a tapering angular hole or recess a, in which the upper end of said standard tits, and in the butt-end of the head is formed a horizontal hole to receive a rod or other instrument by which the head canbe placed on and removed from the standard.

In practice the head is placed on a stove, and when properly heated the rod is inserted in the hole b and the head removed from the stove and placed on the standard. The beveled end of the standard and the tapering hole in the head are so constructed and proportioned that when the head is heated and placed on the standard the upper end of the latter does not come in contact with the end of the hole, but a space will be left therebetween, as seen in the drawings, so as to prevent the parts iitting loosely when the head is heated and applied to the standard, making a tight tit when the head is heated.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a pufiing-iron, the combination with the base and the adjustable standard having its upper end made angular and beveled, of

the egg-shaped ironing-head having its under side flat-tened and formed with an angular tapering hole so proportioned with respect to the beveled end of the standard as to formv a space therebetween, substantially as described.

2. In a puffing-iron, the combination with the base and the adjustable standard having its upper end made angular and beveled, of f the egg-shaped ironing-head having its under side iiattened and formed with an anglilar tapering hole so proportioned with respect to the beveled end of the standard as to form a space therebetween, and said head formed with a horizontal recess or hole in its buttend, substantially as described.
