To all whom it rim/y concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD TEICHMANN, a citizen of the-United States, residing at New York, in the borough of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This in vention relates to an improved me.- chanical toy in which a toy figure carrying a pencil or other scribing-point is swayed and oscillated by a compound cam, so as to produce a suitable drawing or writing upon paper supported in front of said figure on a yielding support or easel, said toy being simple in' its construction and operation to such an extent that it can be cheaply furnished and by an interchange of cams various striking designs can be produced; and the invention consists of a mechanical toy which comprises a base, a rotary compound cam pivoted to said base and having a guide-groove provided with indentations and depressions, a toy figure connected by a universal joint with said base and provided with a guide-pin engaging said guide-groove and with a scribing-point, and a hinged and spring-actuated easel.
The invention consists, further, of certain details of construction, which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved mechanical toy. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the base of my improved mechanical toy. The base A is preferably made of sheet metal and is square or oblong or other shape and provided with several steps, so that its surface is raised above the lower edge of the same. The base A is further provided with a depression a, which carries a central pin or pivot a. On the pin is fitted a centrally-perforated cam-plate B, which is made of sheet metal or other suitable material, said cam-plate being provided with a guide-groove having irregular indentations Z), varying as to their radial distances from the central pivot-pin a, and
with depressions b, varying in depth, so that a compound cam is obtained which performs a double function-na'mely, to impart to a pin guided in the same a movement in lateral direction when passing along the indentations 1) and simultaneously an up-and-down a closed curve so that the pin guided in the same returns to its starting-point after passing over the full length of the cam-groove. Above the base A is arranged a suitable toy figure D, supported on a rod d, the curved lower hook-shaped end of which is made to engage with a slot (1 in the base A, so as to form a joint for permitting free movement of the rod 61 above the base, while the upper end passes through a longitudinal slot e in an upright support or easel E, that is pivoted by means of lugs at its lower. ends into openings of the base A. To the arm of the figure D is applied a socket 01 which carries a scribing-pencil, so that when the figure is operated by the cam-plate B produces a corresponding figure, design, or writing on a piece of paper applied to the upper part of the support or easel E. a of the base A by slightly raising the figure with its guide-pin. WVhen the cam-plate is in position and the guide-pin in position to engage the guide-groove of the cam, it is held in the groove by the tension of the spring 5. A piece of paper is then applied to the prongs at the upper part of the easel. The cam-plate is then slowly turned by the fingers, so that the guide-pin follows the indentations and depressions in the cam-groove. The pencil will therefore produce lines corresponding to the groove in the cam-plate, which may either be made to form a figure, design, or Writing, as desired. The depressions of the cam-plate groove serve to impart to the figure an oscillatory movement, While the variations of the groove from a true circle about the cam-pivot dies, a comparatively cheap and yet highlyamusing mechanical scribing toy is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. A mechanical'toy, consisting of a base, a toy figure supported from the same and carrying a scribing-point, means for supporting a writing-surface against said scribing-point, means for imparting an oscillatory movement to said figure, and means for imparting a swaying movement to said figure, substantially as set forth.
2. A mechanical toy, consisting of a base, a rod pivoted to said base, a toy figure supported on said rod and carrying a scribingpoint, an easel for supporting a writing-surproduce a swaying of the ngure tro-m side to side. The result of the first of these move: ments mentioned is marks in one direction for instance, vertically-and of the swaying movement marks in a direction at an angle to the marks produced by the oscillations for instance, horizontally. By the proper con figuration of the cam-groove2 e., the proper combination of depressions and curves of the groove-the two movements may when desired be imparted simultaneously to the figure, so as to produce a line in any desired direction, thus permitting the drawing of a figure of any given shape or outline upon the Writing surface. By changing thecam plate another design may be drawn on the paper placed on the easel, so that a number of designs or Writings can be produced, according to the number of cam-plates used with the toy.

As the parts can all be stamped up-by Iace against said scriping-point, one end of said rod beiugguided by said easel, and means for imparting motion to said figure, whereby marks are produced on said Writing-surface,
substantially as set forth.
3. A mechanical toy, consisting of a base,
pivoted to said base, means for guiding said rod at its upper portion, a toy figure supported on said rod and carrying a scribing-point, a guide-pin extending from said rod and guided by said cam, a spring for retaining said guidepin in the groove of said cam and said rod in contact With said guiding means, and means for supporting a writing-surface against said scribing-point, substantially asset forth.
