To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Rosoon J. Arr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Northampton, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tellurians; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tellurians.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of an apparatus of the character named whereby the various phenomena due to the movement of the earth around the sun may be' readily and accurately illustrated to the eye.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a tellurian embodying simplicity of construction and which will be comparatively cheap to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a tellurian constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, a detail fragmental perspective view of the carrier which rotatably supports the sphere representing the earth.
Referring to the drawings the invention is shown as comprising a base 10 from which rises an upright 11. The upper end of this upright 11 has fixed thereon a sphere 12 representing the sun. Radiating from the upright 11 are arms 13 the free ends of which are forked to form arms 14 and 15. Mounted upon the arms 14 is an elliptical track 16, while another elliptical track 17 is mounted upon the arms 15, said last named elliptical track being disposed in parallel relation to the track 16, the tracks 16 and 17 representing the earths orbit. Supported by the tracks 16 and 17 is carrier A which includes a rod 18 provided with a flange 19 rest-ing upon the upper sides of the tracks 16 and 17. The end of the rod 18 ad acent the flange 19 is provided with a threaded recess 20 in which is engaged a set screw 21. This screw 21 is also provided with a flange 22 which is adapted to bear against the lower sides of the tracks 16 and 17 the shank of said screw extending between said tracks as will be obvious. The upper end of the rod 18 is bent at an angle as at 23, the angularity of the upper end of the rod 18 with respect to the sphere 12 corresponding to the angularity of the earths axis with respect to the sun. Mounted in the upper end of the rod 18 and having its longitudinal axis disposed co-incident with the longitudinal axis of said upper end is a rod 2d upon which is rotatably mounted a sphere 25 representing the earth. The upper side of the track 16 has inscribed thereon the different months of the year for the purpose of demonstration in the usual and well known manner.
In the use of the apparatus the carrier A is adapted to be moved around the tracks 16 and 17 to the desired position for explaining a particular phenomenon. It will be apparent that by operating the screw 21 outwardly the carrier can be moved as desired and when the latter is disposed in the proper position the screw 21 is operated inwardly so as to clamp the tracks 16 and 17 between the flanges 19 and 22 and thus lock said carrier on the tracks.
