Leters of like name und l-zin l referto lille parte in each of ille iigures.
The objeei'f of my invention is ille provision of :i cnririilge constructed for use more espeeially with automatic guns; and to this enel.
said invention consists in ille cartridge hav ing the 'construction substzrntinlly :is herein :Liter Specified.
vrllie cartridge forming the Subject-metter of this polentn'ns devised for use with my aulionmiie gg'un whieli forms the subject-mntter ol my application for potent, Serial No. (559,502, ile'elovemberi, 1397, find. While in describing my carin( ge herein l shall refer to the gun shown in Snirl applica-tien it is to be understood ilmii (lo notreslriei, myself ifo its use with such gun or, in JTief, io any pm- -ieulnr construction of gun.
ln the embodiments oi' my invention illustrated herein ille shell is shown os mnde in two perils nml A', Lhe former being` :i liollow eylincler with one end open and ille einer emi forming ille cartridge bese orlieml il, and the pari'- An hollow cylinder inciosing :md closely timing the oiher end provided .at one cnil will! interior Sercu'hrezicl le engage e):- cerior llueul on. -lie end of the part A nenr the onse or henil fz. i need centi-:illy within the cartridge is a longindinnlly-movable roll o'r plunger C,
whose rear en l pesse through n central openinc in @he bese 0r bend a and which hes nn annular enlargement their forme n head or pislon B, fitting :nul movable in an axial direeiion .riihin a, oylinclriezil passage a2, formed in the inner shell part near the base or head (e. The elim-ge of powder or other explosive E is placed between the piston and tho rear end of lio bullet, :incl it is fired by ineens of n 'primer-l?, ihn'n is exploded by the front end of the plunger C, which reaches 00 :i point'J in the front part o the charge.. As shown in Fig. 9, the primer, being in the forni of n e'ap, ispleced over the fronb end of the plunger, so that; by the forward movemenn of the letter it will be struck against the renr end or bese of the bullet. Instead of beingr placed upon the plunger end Such zifforin of primer een, as shown in Fig. 5, be applied to the nur let by being,l placed upon en nnril '11, formed in the base tliereoil in Figs. 3 and 6 the primer shown in the 'forni oi' n pellet, which in ille former nease is shown nttzicliecl no lille end of the plunger and in lire hitter oase to lie end of the bulle". As eliown'in Fig. Il, the primer consists of i percussion-disk resting against the bose of the bullet.
lVhen ille iring-pin 0f the gun strikes the rear exposed end of timek plunger C, the forwnril movement thus given te the lai' ter will enlise the iii-iin,r 'of the primer and ignite the ehnrge of explosivo. The 'pressure ef the gases generned bythe ignition of the charge rioting on the piston D will Lhen force the plunger reni-Ward, :ind the lnLLer being in engagement with ifne firing-pin of the gun will carry sniil pin rearward sind produce ille operation of the breech meelumism, :is fully ser, forth in my Said application,Serial No. 659,502, to which reference mede for the description of the consti-velieri and operation o' my gen.
il; is to be undcrsoorl Limb the cartridge een be ol :my desired iype,an l 'the shell een be niznle in the usuel or nnycleeired wey but l prefer the inve-parteonesLrueiion shown, 'because it enables 'tire easy proviiaion o the piston'- pnssnge n? and the moet convenient priming ICO 2 esame and loading of the cartridge. It is also desirableas it results in a shell that is good, strong, and durable and capable of being re loaded and used repeatedly without injury. When fired in a gun, the pressure of .the gases of explosion expands the inner part against the Walls of the outer part, so that there can be no leakage of gas rearward and outward between the two.
Vhile I have shownand described my cartridge as arranged te be fired by a primer ignited by the forward end of the plunger within the cartridge, l do not limit myself to theuse of such an arrangement, but contem plate, when desired, employing other means rearward pressure of the gases of explosion' within the cartridge, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A cartridge having a base with an opening therethrough, and an enlarged interior passage connected with such opening, and a movable plunger adapted to be engaged by the firing-pin of a/gun in which the cartridge is used, and having a portion fitting in 'and closing the enlarged passage, with its forward explosion within the cartridge, .so that suchv pressure will move the plunger rearward or outward when the cartridge is tired, substan tially as and for the purpose described.
3. A cartridge having a base with an opening, with both ends unclosed, and an interior passage connecting with such opening, but made larger than the same, and a plunger having a part movable in the opening in the base, and having a head. movable in the' passage, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a cartridge, in combination with a shell having a base with an opening through it, and an enlarged passage at the inner end of the opening, an igniting-plunger having a .part to move in the openinganda head tting in the passage, a projectile held in the shell, and an igniter or primer between the end of the ignitingplungerand the projectile, adapted to be exploded against the base 0E the projectile by forward movement of-the igniting: plunger, substantialb` as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim I the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d dayy of June, A. l). 1898.
