Be it known that I, STEPHEN E. PARRISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tecumseh, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Im provementsin Baskets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention consists in the construction of a clip for attaching handles to baskets and in the construction of the handle applied thereto, whereby the construction of such attaching devices is simplified and cheapened and whereby the basket may be more readily shipped in a knockdown condition or without the projection of the handle, all as more fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view through a basket, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional perspective view of one end of the handle and the clip. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a different form of handle. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the basket complete, showing the handle as illustrated in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clip illustrated in Fig. 8.

A is an ordinary fruit-basket, the body portion being provided at the top with a reinforcing band or bands B.

My clip for attaching the handle I make from a single piece of sheet metal, preferably of rectangular form, as shown in Fig. 5. This clip is attached to the basket by bending it into substantially S shape or into a double hook, one hook C of approximately U shape engaging beneath the reinforcing-band B and the opposite hook D or the other portion of the S shape being engaged over the top of the basket. The construction therefore embodies a clip with two oppositely-bent hooks, one of which holds the clip upon the basket against downward displacement and the other one engages beneath the reinforcing-band and carries or provides for the load which may be in the basket. The handle may be secured to this clip in various manners. The construction which I prefer to employ comprises a metallic handle (shown in Figs. 1 and 2) consisting of a piece of wire bent into the shape of a bail 0r handle, as shown in the part lettered E. One member of the clip, preferably the outer one, is provided with a struck-out portion F, through which the ends of the handles are passed, and the end is then bent to have the offset or shoulder G, which engages beneath the hook and beneath the reinforcing-band B and carries the load. With this construction the handle may be moved vertically, sliding within the ears F, so that without removing it the cross-bar of the handle may be moved down flush with the top of the basket, and thus make, in effect, a knockdownbasket without removing the handle. I may, however, use a wooden handle, in which case I preferably form securing-lugs H, struck out from the blank to engage into the end of the handle, as plainly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Either construction will come under the spirit of my invention, which in its broader meaning includes, broadly, the construction of clip described and shown, with securing means for the handle thereon.

In case the wooden handle is used a handle will preferably be made separate from the basket and packed in the basket, and the purchaser has simply to engage the clip beneath the reinforcing-bands and then bend down the end over the top of the basket, as shown in Fig. 3, to thereby attach the handle to the basket.

I/Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a basket-body and its reinforcing top band, of a sheet-metal clip having two oppositely-turned hooks engaging the basket-top and top band by which it is solely attached to the basket, and a handle attached to the clip.

2. The combination with abasket-body and its reinforcing top band, of a sheet-metal clip the body of which is between the basket-body and top band, said clip having two oppositelyturned hooks, one engagingbeneath the band, and one engaging over the top of the basketbody, and a bail-shaped handle secured at opposite ends to the clip.

3. The combination with the basket, of clips secured to the basket, a guide-loop on each clip, a wire bail having vertical members slidin gly engaging with the guide-loops,

and hooks on said vertical members adapted to engage with the clips, substantially as described.
