Be it known that I, GUY EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a certain newand useful Improvement in Fire'EXtinguishing Compounds, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to that class in which the active element is in the form of powder. I inclose convenient quantitiesabout two (2) pounds each-in cylindrical cases of durable material, as tinned iron, with provisions for rapidly and easily opening one end, leaving the body of the case, with its contents,
-free to be. carried to any point, and provide for conveniently distributing the powder in the immediate vicinity of the fire.
The invention relates to the composition of powder used.
I have discovered a compound which is unusually efficient. The following is the formula: twelve parts (12) of bi-carbonate of soda; two parts (2) of phosphate of ammonia; two parts (2) of common salt, using the most refined and whitest; two parts (2) of metallic brown, sometimes called Princes metallic brown;? four parts (4;) of yellow ochre, and six parts (6) of pipe-clay. These materials are separately pulverized and are very intimately mixed by repeated siftings together. This dry material is introduced in to the metal cases in such slightly-compacted condition as it will assume by gravity with gentle shaking or jarring. It is' used by opening the case and shaking it. It is preferable to distribute this powder near the base of the fire. The powder rises when heated.
I claim as my invention- The fire-extinguishing powder described, containing phosphate of ammonia, bi-earbonate of soda, white salt, pipe-clay, yellow ochre and .Princes metallic brown, in the proportions substantially as herein specified.
