ALFRED IV. RASMUSSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ERIK L. KRAG,

TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 623,627, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed April 13, I898. vberial 677,410. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: is the preferred construction; but the springs Be it known that I,ALFRED WV. RASMUSSEN, may be rigidly connected together in a mana citizen of the United States, residing at Chiher to permit them to perform their locking cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illifunction by fastening them directly to the 55 nois, have invented a new and useful Imcover-section or to the strip E simply. The
provement in Temporary Binders, of which lower members are provided each .with a perthe following is a specification. foration which registers accurately with the My invention relates to an improvement in corresponding perforation in the strip A, temporary binders for use in holding loose while the upper members are provided with 60 leaves, ledger-sheets, bills, orders, or thelike. elongated openings 1), which in the normal My object is to provide a binder of this naposition of the springs are slightly out of ture having readily-separablecoversprovided registration with the lower perforations, so with means for locking the-m automatically that the upper members of the springs have and firmly together. frictional contact with the posts at the inner 65 1 The invention consists in two separable ends of the elongated openings. The posts covers, the lower one of which is provided at may be provided near their tops with notches its rear margin with upwardlyextending it to prevent possibility of the parts separat: posts and the other at its rear margin with ing when the covers are full. perforations to receive said posts, and a lock- The operation of the device is simple and o ing device for the parts comprising sheet effective. The leaves tobe bound are prospring metal strips preferably bent upon vided with perforations to permit them to be themselves and each secured at one end to slipped onto the posts B and after the leaves the perforated cover-section and provided are in place the cover-section A is pressed with perforations normally slightly out of down upon them. The frictional contact of 75 registration with the cover-section perforathe upper spring members with the posts tions causes the outer ends to rise relatively to the In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 lower members as the cover-section is pressed is a plan view of the upper cover-section down, thereby causing the grip of the springs equipped with my improved spring looking to become lessened till the upper members 80 o device; Fig. 2, a view in rear elevation of the slip readily along the posts. To re- 85 cover-section, the sections being provided by lease the cover-section, it is necessary first to preference with metallic binding-strips A B, raise the ends of the springs, thereby to bring hinged to the sections by canvas hinges if. the elongated openings more correctly into The strip B is provided with upwardly-proregistration with the lower openings, when jecting posts 13 which extend through perthe removal is readily effected. 90 4o forations in the binding-strip A of the upper Slight modifications in details within the cover-section. spirit of my invention may be made. For in- Attached to the strip A of the upper coverstance, the lower members r of the springs, section are spring-metal locking-strips C and which are by preference shorter than the up- D. These strips are preferably of the U per members, so as to be concealed thereby, 5 shape shown, being composed of lower memmay be still further shortened, so as to renbers 4 and upper members 1". Theends of der unnecessary the post-receiving perforathe springs project outwardly, and the ends tions with which they are here shown proof the lower members are secured by means vided. An obvious change also would be to of rivets r to a common securing member E, transfer the gripping-surface of the springs I00 which in turn is secured to the strip A of the to the outer ends ofthe slots, in which case top cover member by means of rivet-s g. This the members 0 would preferably be given a slight downward slant. In such case the U shape of the spring could be departed from. In any case the gripping member must be raised slightly above the cover-section to permit a downward give, which will increase the gripping action when it is attempted to raise the cover-section without first releasing the springs.
IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a loose-leaf binder, the combination of a lower cover-section provided at its rear margin with upwardly-projeeting posts, an upper cover-section provided at its rear margin with post-receiving perforations, and U- shaped springs having their lower members secured to the upper cover-section and their upper members provided with slots and in frictional engagement with the posts at such ends of the slots as to allow the cover-section to be readily pressed downward, but to per members being in frictional contact with their respective posts at the ends of the slots toward the connected ends of the members, thereby permitting a downward movement of the upper cover-section but locking it against return, substantially as described.
ALFRED W. RASMUSSEN.
