To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it knownthat I, UPSURE D. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Philadelphia, in the count-y of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harrows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harrows, and pertains to a V-shaped harrow consisting of angle-irons and a means or memher for uniting the front or apex of the harrow together and for clamping a tooth thereat, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a plate constructed to fit within the apex of a V-shaped harrow formed of angle-iron and to clamp and unite the angle-iron at the same time, provided with means for clamping a tooth and also with'means for holding a bar for regulating the draft of the harrow.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a harrow embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the plate for clamping the points of the harrow and for sustaining a tooth in the nose or apex thereof. Fig. 3 is an under view of the front end of the harrow. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the block G. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the center of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, A indicates the frame of the harrow, which is composed of an L-shaped angle-iron, as shown, and of a V-shaped form, as shown. The horizontal portion of the angle-iron is cut away at an angle, as shown by the line ain Fig. 3, to fit the adjoining ends of the angle-iron together for forming the nose or apex of the harrow, as will be readily understood.
My invention pertains to a plate B, which is V-shaped in form and provided with vertical walls I) and fitting within the nose of the harrow and resting upon the horizontal portion of the L-shaped angle-iron. Bolts D pass through the vertical walls of this plate B and through the vertical portion of the angle-iron of the frame A, thus clamping securely together the nose of the frame, as will be readily understood. This plate B is provided at its apex or nose with a vertical opening d for the reception of a tooth e and is provided with a projection E, having its front face inclined, as shown at g. Ooacting with this. inclined face 9 is a block G, having its rear face correspondingly inclined and its front edge shaped to receive the tooth. Passing vertically through this block G and through the plate B and also through the horizontal portion of the angle-iron of the frame is a clampingbolt II, provided with a nut I, whereby this block is adapted to he forced downward and to clamp the tooth, as will be readily understood. The horizontal portion of the a11- gle-iron of the frame is provided with an opening m, registering with the tooth-opening in the plate B and through which the tooth passes, as clearly shown.
The harrow is provided with a draft-bar K, consisting of a rod doubled at its forward end, as shown, and extending rearwardly and expanded and provided with inwardly-projecting ends passing'through openings 2' in the Vertical portion of the angle-iron of the frame. The harrow is also provided with a bar L, having its rear end connected with a bar M, which unites the rear ends of the angle-irons, and the front end of this bar is supported by meansof a perforated arm N. The plate B has its projection provided with a Vertical openingn, which receives the lower end of the perforated bar N, and this is secured in position by means of a clamping-bolt p. The forward end of the bar L is provided with an opening through which the perforated arm N passes, and the bolt 8 is adapted to support this bar in any desired vertical position. This bar limits the vibrating movement of the draft link or bar K, whereby the draft of the harrow can be regulated as desiredthat is to say, that if the bar L is low down the draft on the draft-link K will tend to lift the nose of the harrow, whereas if it is high it will tend to force the nose of the harrow in the ground, owing to the fact that it is attached to the harrow in rear of its front end. This draft-bar K, it will be noted, consists of the parallel portion f, which extends close to the perforated arln N, wherebyin its vertical movement it will strike the bar L.
By means of this construction I am enabled to provide a plate which serves to unite the front end of the angle-iron of the harrowframe, support and clamp a tooth, and also support a perforated arm for regulating the draft of the harrow.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A barrow comprisinga frame consisting of L-shaped angle-irons, a V-shaped plate having vertical walls fitting within the vertical portion of the L-shaped angle-iron, and bolts passing through the vertical portions of the plate and the angle-iron for uniting them together, substantially as described.
2. A barrow com prisinga frame consisting of L-shaped angle-irons, and a V-shaped plate situated within the nose of the harrow and having vertical walls, the said plate having a vertical tooth-opening,a projection upon the plate with a front inclined face, and a block having its rear edge correspondingly inclined and its front edge formed to receive the tooth, and a clamping-bolt passing through the plate and the said block for drawing it downward and clamping the tooth, substantially as described.
3. A V-shaped harrow consisting of L- shapcd angle-irons, a V-shaped plate uniting the angle-irons, a vertical perforated arm su pported by the plate, and a draft-bar provided with parallel portions at each side of the said perforated arm its rear end extended and united to the vertical portion ofthe L-shaped angle-ironsin rear of the nose of the harrow, and astop upon the perforated arm for limiting the movement of the d raft-bar, substantially as described.
4. A V-shaped harrow consisting of L- 'vided at its sides with vertical walls and fitting within the nose of the harrow, clampingbolts passing through the plate and angleirons of the frame, the plate and the horizontal portion of the angle-iron having registering tooth-openings, the plate provided with a clamp for clamping the tooth, substantially as described.
5. A barrow comprising a frame formed of L-shaped angle-irons, a V-shaped plate fitting within the nose of the harroW, clamping-bolts passing through the plate and the angleirons, the plate provided with a tooth-opening and clamp, and with a vertical socket, a vertical perforated arm fitted within the said socket, and a bar extending longitudinally of the frame having its front end adjustably held by the perforated arm, and a draft-bar, the parts combined substantiallyas described.
6. The combination with a V-shaped harrow having a frame with vertical webs, of a horizontal V-shaped plate fitting within the nose of the harrow and having vertical walls, and horizontal clamping-bolts passing through the vertical walls of the frame and the plate, substantially as described.
7. The combination with a V-shaped harrow, of a V-shaped plate fitting within the nose of the harrow and uniting the same, the plate provided with a tooth-opening and a clamp, substantially as described.
