STOPPER FOR BOTTLES OR SIMILAR VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,359, dated April 18, 1899.

To (all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN EDWARD .FAR- RELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Bottles or Similar Vessels, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use'the same.
This invention relates to stoppers for bottles and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be used in connection with a bottle or similar vessel for any desired purpose and which is particularly adapted for use in connection with beer-bottles, mineral-water bottles, and other vessels of this class.
The invention is fully disclosed in the'following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side View of the upper part of a bottle and the neck thereof provided with my improved stopper, and Fig. 2 a view at right angles to that of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings 1 have shown at 5 the upper part of a bottle provided with the usual neck 6. The neck 6 is provided at a predetermined distance below the top thereof with an annular head or shoulder 7, below which is placed a ring 8, with the opposite sides of which is pivotally connected, as shown at 9, a yoke 10, the length of which is greater than the length of the neck of the bottle above the bead or shoulder 7.
A screw-threaded shaft 11 passes centrally through the cross-head 12 of the yoke 10, and mounted on the lower end 13 of said shaft, which is cylindrical in form, is astopper composed of a central portion 14, which is preferably provided at its upper end with an annular rim or'flange 15, below which is placed a packing ring or band 16, of rubber or any suitable material, and the lower end of the shaft 11 is provided with a head 17, preferably countersunk in the central portion 14 of the stopper, and above the cylindrical portion 13 of the shaft 11 on which the stopper is mounted said shaft is enlarged to form an annular shoulder 18, between which and the head 17 of said shaft the stopper is placed.
The central portion 14 of the stopper is preferably composed of metal, and the head 17 is preferably formed by hammering after the stopper is placed on the end of the shaft. The stopper may consist, however, of anypreferred material and may be connected with the lower end of the shaft 11 in any desired manner.
The cross-head 12 of the yoke 10 is thickened centrally or raised, as shown at 19, to give a bearing to the shaft 11, and said shaft is preferably provided at its upper end, as shown in the drawings, with an angular keyhead 20, by means of which a key or Wrench may be connected therewith, so as to turn said shaft.
A bail 21 is connected with the sides of the yoke 12, near the top thereof, as clearly shown in the drawings, and said bail is designed to serve for the usual purpose in carrying and handling the bottle and is always free to swing above the top of the stopper, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
In order to cork or close the bottle or vessel, the shaft 11 is first turned in the reverse direction, so as to draw the stopper close up to the cross-head 12 of the yoke 10. The yoke is then swung into the vertical position, as shown in the drawings, in which position the stopper is directly over the neck of the bottle or vessel. The shaft 11 is then turned to the right, and the cork or stopper is forced downwardly into the neck of the vessel, so as to securely close the same, and the only Way to release the cork or stopper or to remove it from the bottle or vessel is to again turn the shaft 11 in the reverse direction.
My improved stopper is simple in construction and operation, and by means thereof a bottle or vessel may be recorked as often as desired, and the said cork or stopper, together with the shaft 11, may be made of any desired material, such material being preferred as will not be affected by acids or liquids.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A stopper for bottles and similar vessels, comprising a yoke pivotally connected With the neck of the bottle or vessel, the crosshead of said yoke being thickened centrally ally secured to said yoke and by which the bottle may be handled, the cross-head of said yoke being thickened centrally and provided with a threaded bearing, a screw-threaded shaft passing through said bearing, said screwshaft being provided at its upper end with an angular key-head and a stopper through which the lower end of said shaft passes, said stopper being secured thereto by a head formed upon the lower end of said shaft, and an annular shoulder formed above said head, substantially as shown and described.
