GAS-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 623,] 61, dated April 18, 1899.
Application filed December 22,1898. Serial No. 700,024. (No model.)
To all whom it may cone aria.
Be it known that I, EDWARD 15. J ACOBSON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Gas-Cocks; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The invention has reference to im provements in cocks for gas-fixtures of all kinds.
One object of the invention is to so construct a gas-cock that accidental opening of the same may be prevented.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a safety gas-cock that it may be readily applied to the fixtures at present in use without materially changing the fixtures.
Another object is to provide a gas-cock positively secured against longitudinal movement in its seat with a ratchet locking device.
Still another object is to provide a simple and durable ratchet gas-cock which may be locked at predetermined points against acoi-' dental movement.
The invention consists in the combination, with the valve-seat and ratchet supported thereby, of a spring-operated pawl member mounted on an extension of the cock and adapted to interlock with the ratchet.
The invention also consists in a valve-seat and a valve or cook rotatable in the seat and positivel-ysecured against longitudinal movement therein, combined with a ratchet looking device for the cook.
The invention also consists in the construction of the ratchet locking device and its combination with the cock.
The invention still further consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of the improved gas-cock mounted upon the valve-seat of a gas-fixture. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view in perspective of the ratchet, more clearly showing the internal ratchet. Fig. 3 represents a perspective View of the spring-operated ratchet or pawl member. Fig. elrepresents a similar view of the base-block.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
In carrying this invention into practice I have for my main object the prevention of the accidental opening of gas-cocks and of the danger to life or health resulting from such accidental opening.
Gas-cocks of the ordinary construction soon become loose in their seats and are liable to be sufficiently rotated by anyaccidental striking of the handle to admit the passage of gas through the same, and when these cocks are turned to shut off the gas there is a tendency to give a reverse movement to the cock through unconscious muscular action of the fingers as they pass over the handle of the cock in leaving the same. This invention is designed to overcome these objections through the use of a ratchet interlocking mechanism which requires a positive action of the handle to open the same, while inter- I v eter toward its top and forming the valveseat between two pipes opening into said bore, the lower portion of the enlargement 5 having the shoulders 7 7 to act as stops for the valve-pin. The valve or cock 8 is also of the usual construction, tapering to fit the valve-seat and having the transverse passage 9 and the screw-threaded socket 10 at its upper end, while the stop-pin 11 is secured at a point where it can be brought against one of the shoulders 7 in closing the cock. To apply the locking attachment to this ordinary gas-cock, I first form the slot 12 in the upper part of the enlargement 5. In this slot I seat the extensions 13 13 of the base-piece 14-,which has a peripheral thread and is centrally perforated. By seating of the extensions 13 13 in the slot 12 the base 14 is held against rotation. The cock or valve 8 is then inserted, as usual, and into the socket is screwed the post 15, having a screw-thread for a portion of its length and a perforation near its top to receive the pin 16. The post may be further secured to the cock by the pin 17 or in any other suitable manner. A washer 18 is now slipped down over the post 15, and the checknuts 19 and 20 are screwed into place on said post, thus positively securing the cock in its seat against longitudinal movement, as these nuts force the washer against the top of the base 14, while these nuts 19 and 20, thus bearing against the base 14, firmly secure this base and the structure mounted thereon against upward movement and hold the base 14 in the slot 12 of the enlargement 5. The coiled spring 21 is now placed over the post 15 and the eyelet 22 is passed in the inverted position over the post and is embraced by the upper coils of the spring. On this eyelet is placed the perforated pawl-block or ratchet 23, which is secured against the pressure of the spring 21 by the pin 16. This block has the upwardly-tapering ratchet-teeth24 24,and in its sleeve are formed the V-shaped slots 25 25 to provide clearance for working over the pin 16 as this block reciprocates on its post under the action of the opposing ratchets. Over the post 15 and its springoperated ratchet is placed the cylinder 26, having the downwardly-tapering internal ratchet-teeth 27 and screw-threaded at its lower inner portion to engage with the thread of the base 14, to which the cylinder 26 is further secured by the binding-screws 28, the casing 29 fitting over the ratchet-cylinder to protect the en tire mechanism. WVhen this locking mechanism is in place, the opposing ratchets exert resistance to the turning of the cock, depending on the strength of the spring 21 and the shape of the ratchets. These are intended to be so proportioned as to prevent any accidental turning of the cock, while readily yielding to a determined action. The position of the ratchets being so adjusted that when in closing the cock the point is reached where the flame is extinguished for lack of gas, a small amount of gas still passing through, the action of the opposing ratchets under pressure of the spring will tend to carry the cock to the closed position.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A gas-cock comprising a valve-seat a valve rotatable in the seat and furnished with a post, a spring-operated ratchet member carried by the post, and a ratchet member held against movement with which the movable ratchet may engage.
2. A gas-cock comprising the following instrumentalities, a valve-seat, a valve rotatable therein, means for preventing the longitudinal movement of the valve in the seat, a spring-operated ratchet carried by the valve and a ratchet fixed against rotation with which the first-mentioned ratchet may en- 3. In a gas-cock, a rotatable valve secured against longitudinal movement, a post forming part of said securing means, and a springoperated ratchet carried by the post, with stationary means for engaging said ratchet.
4. A gas-cock comprising a valve-seat, a normally-fixed ratchet member removably secured to the valve-seat case, a valve rotatable in the valve-seat and a spring-operated ratchet carried thereby.
5. A gas-cock comprising a valve-seat having a slot in its upper portion, a perforated base having means for engaging said slot to prevent the rotation of the base, a valve r0- tatable in the valve-seat and having a post extending through the perforation in the base, and nuts on the post.
6. In a gas-cock, the combination with a valve-case having a tapering valve-seat, and a valve rotatable in the seat, of a ratchet member engaged with the valve-case, a post extending from the valve, means on the post forsecuringsaid engagin'gmeans and aspring- -.operated ratchet on the post.
7. The combination with the valve-casing 5 having the valve-seat and the slot 12, the base 14 having the portions 13 engaged against rotation in said slot, and the ratchet-cylinder 26 secured to said base, of the valve 8, the post 15 secured therein, the nuts 19 and 20 on the post, the spring 21 embracing the post, and the ratchet member 26 movable on the post, as described.
