SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.- 623,130, dated April 18, 1899.
Application tiled March 19, 1898.
To a/ZZ whom t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BoiiM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Testwood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Rope-Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rope-clamps, and is designed as an improvement on the patent issued to me August 31, 1897, No. 589,333, for a fastening device; and the object of my present invention is to provide means for the ready admission of the rope or strap which itis designed to hold, a further object being to cheapen the cost of manufacture and adapt the device to a more extended use. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a bottom plan view of my improved rope-clamp, and Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section thereof.
Similar numerals of reference refer to like parts in each of the views; and in the practice of myinvention I provide a link 5, having a straight end 6, and one of the sides is turned inwardly, as shown at 7, and meets the opposite side 8 at 9, and the side 8 is provid ed with a hook-shaped extension 10. This part of my invention may be formed out of a rod or may be stamped out of sheet metal or may be cast. I also provide a clamping-plate 1l, the sides of which are parallel, and one end is formed into two housings 12, through which the end G of the link 5 is adapted to pass and by means of which a hinged connection is made between the said plate and link, and out of the central part of the end ahousing 13 is formed, adapted to engage a ring 11i or any other device by which it may be secured to a rope, strap', or fabric. The plate 11 is preferably composed of wrought metal, and the housings are formed by slitting the end and bending the separate parts over and after the link and ring are inserted clenching, respectively, the separate housings, this operation being indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The opposite end of the plate 1l is concaved, as shown at 15, and the points 16 of said plate are adapted to overlap a portion of the hook 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, so that Serial No. 674.521. (No model.)

It will be observed that as the housings 12 and 13 rise to the same plane, when the ring 14 is in engagement with the housing 13, the
l sides of said link will rest upon the housings 12 and the rear end of said ring will be elevated, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and when a rope is attached to said ring and stress is placed upon the same in conjunction with the opposite end of the link the ring 14 will act as a lever and the housings 12 as fulcrums, so
that the plate 11 will be powerfully drawn toward the link 5 or hook 10 thereof. I may also employ aspring 17, which is yoke-shaped in form, and the same is held in position by two housings 18. The closed end of said spring extends beyond said housings 18 and the free ends project in the opposite direction and are provided with angular extensions '19, adapted to overlap the sides of the link 5, and by this construction the plate is held normally against the link, as will be readily understood.
The operation of myl device is as follows: A rope 20, of greater diameter than the distance between the concave part 15 of the plate 11 and the hook 10, is brought into engagement with the said hook by elevating the plate 11 at the free end thereof and passing the rope between the point of said hook and the side 7 of the link 5, and when released the free end of the plate 11 will be brought into engagement with said rope by reason of the stress placed on the rope and on the ring 14, and the rope will be securely clamped between said plate and hook, as will be clearly understood. The spring 17 is adapted to pre- Vent the plate 11 from swinging back away from the rope when adjusting the same, and it is also evident that when it is desired to secure a line of less diameter than the distance between the end of the plate 11 and hook 10 the spring 1.7 will hold the free end of the said plate in contact with the free end of said hook, thereby forming an ordinary snap-hook,
as will be clearly understood.
It is evident that many changes may be made in construction without departing from IOO the spirit of-rny invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make all changes which fairly come within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. Arope-clamp,comprisingalink provided with a hook extension; a plate hinged to said link, the free end thereof being adapted to overlap a portion of said hook extension, and
.means to hold said free end adjacent to, or
against said hook extension, consisting of' an attaching device secured to the under side of said plate, and fulcrumed on the housings forming the hinged connection between said plate and link, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. Arope-clanlpcomprisingalink5,having curved side 7 and straight side 8 with hook extension 10; a plate 11, having housings 12,
and a housing 13, and concave end 15; an attachingdevice 14 secured in said housing 13, and fulcrumed on the housings l2, said plate being provided with points 16 adapted to engage a portion of said hook 10, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a rope-clamp, comprising a link 5, having hook extension 10; aplate 11 having housings 12, and a housing 13; an attaching device 14, and a spring 17, combined lsubstantially as and for the purpose described.
