SPECIFICATION forming part of Iletters Patent No. 623,071., dated April 11, 1899.

To all whom it) may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY BRooKMANN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at IIomewood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art 'to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a novel construction in a cultivator, the object being to provide a simple, cheap, efficient, and light device of this character; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring now to said drawings, A indicates a beam consisting, preferably, of a T- iron, of which the flange 1 is cut away on an incline from the middle toward the ends. At the middle portion of said beam A, I provide an upright B, which is bifurcated at its upper end, as at 2. Perforations 3 are pro vided in said flange 1, between the middle and ends thereof, which are adapted to receive the hooked ends 4 of rods 5, secured at their other ends to the pole 6. A segment 7 is mounted onsaid pole and enters said bifurcated portion 2 of said upright B. Said segment is provided with a plurality of perforations 8, which are adapted to receive the set screw 9, passing transversely through said uprightB, whereby said pole 6 is adapted to be adjusted according to the height of the party drawing the cultivator. A plurality of rods 10 are pivotally mounted at one end on the flange 11 of said T-iron A by means of the bolts 12, and at their other ends carry the downwaidly-extending triangular blades or plows 13. are adj ustably held in position relative to each other by means of hooks 14, embracing said rods and having screw-threaded ends passing through slots 5 in plates 16, pivoted at .one end to the outer ends of-beams 17, which in turn are pivotally mounted at their inner ends upon the end portions of the flange 11. Said plates 16 are adapted to project over one another at their free ends, and thereby form an extensible plate or beam which is adapted to be held rigid by means of one of said hooks l4,the stem of which passes through the slots in both said plates and receives a thumb-screw 18, by means of which said plates are clamped upon each other and upon the middle rod 10. The remaining books 14 are likewise adapted to receive thumb-screws on their stems to clamp said rods 10 in position. Said rods 10 are preferably of difierent lengths, so as to permit them to be adjusted in close 'relative position for obvious reasons, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. I

My device is obviously very adjustable in every way and is extremely simple, durable, and light. It is also very cheap to manufacture.

I claim as my invention- In a cultivator, the combination with a beam and a plurality of rods carrying blades pivotally mounted thereon and movable horizontally, of slotted plates mounted upon said rods and to which the latter are adj ustably secured by means of clamps passing through said slots therein, said plates being relatively adjustable, whereby the blades can be adjusted in position with relation to each other, and a draft-beam pivotally secured to said beams and adapted to be adjusted in position thereon to regulate the depth to which said blades break ground, substantially as described.
