Description

No. 623.039. Patented Apr. I899.
E. P. SARGENT.
GATE FOR CABS.
(Application filed Nov. 4, 1898.)
(No Model.)
NITED STATES EDWARD P. SARGENT, OF MERRIMAC, MASSACHUSETTS.
GATE FOR CARS 7 srEoIFIcA'rroN forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,039, dated April 11,1399. I Application filed November 4, 1898. Serial No. 695,472. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrimac, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates for Gars,'of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gates for cars, and
is more especially designed for use in connection with street-cars,- although it may be used with advantagein all descriptions of passenger-cars. Theobject of the invention is to provide a vertically-movable sectional or folding gate and spring arms or catches for holding the gate in an elevated position, so as to prevent persons from getting on or oif the platform, the construction being such that when the said catches are disengaged the gate will fall down through an opening in the platform in rear of the step, the two sections folding so as to occupy but little space. I
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective view of a portion of a car provided with my improved gate, the latter being shown elevated or closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the gate lowered and folded. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line a: m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the spring-catches.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the platform of a car, 2 the roof,
Said bar 12 has eyes 15 at cured to the front of the car and to the rod 4 are springs 16, provided with heads 01 catches 17, which engage under the eyes 15 and hold the gate elevated or closed. There is an opening18 in the p1atform,through which the gate drops in opening the same, and the bar 12 is provided with a flange 19 at the upper end and a handhold 20.
When the gate is elevated and closed, it is held in such position by the spring-catches. To open the same, the catches are disengaged from-the eyes, when the gate will drop down through the opening 18, the upper section folding, as seen in Fig. 2, leaving an unobstructed passage for persons to enter and leave the car. 1
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with the car and plat form formed with an opening and the vertical rods, of the gate comprising the lower vertically-movable section composed of connected horizontal bars through which said rods pass,
the upper one of which is formed with apertured lugs, the upper vertically-movable and folding section comprising the horizontal bars through which said rods also pass, the lower one of which is formed with apertured lugs, the depending rods secured to the bars of said upper section and passing through said lugs and the nuts at the lower ends thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a car the combination with the platand 3 the front.
The numeral 4 designates a vertical rod at each side of the car and secured to the platform and roof. Secured to the car-step are two vertical rods 5, the upper ends of which are secured, respectively, to the car-front and form formed with an opening, the vertical rods secured to the platform and roof thereof and the vertical rods secured to the platform, of the vertically-movable upper and lower gate-sections working on said last-mentioned rods, the depending rods provided with nuts and the spring-catches adapted to engage with said upper section, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I EDWARD P. SARGENT. Witnesses:
SIMPSON A. McCoNNELL, FRANK F. PHILBRIOK.
