(No Modei.)
Patented Apr. ll, I899. W. H. STEVENS.
SASH HOLDER.
(Application filed July 1, 1897.)
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WILLIAM H. STEVENS, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PHILIP GERST, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,828, dated April 11, 1899.
Application filed July 1, 1897. Serial No. 643,088. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-holders, and more particularly to improved means for holding the sash in any desired position.
The objects of my invention are, first, to dispense with the customary weights now employed for holding the sash in position, and, second, to hold the sash in any position in which it may be placed.
To these ends my invention consists of certain details of construction, all of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an inside elevation of the Window-frame and its sashes with my improvements attached' Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1, looking toward one side.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the windowframe, and 2 is the upper and 3 the lower sash.
In the present invention the means which I employ to hold the sash in any desired position is clearly shown in the drawings, especially in Fig 2 thereof. In such construction, 13 is a retaining-strip pivoted at its upper end at 14 to the window-frame 1 and hanging within the same in position to lie normally in contact with the inner face of the lower sash 3. The keeper which I employ in this connection consists, preferably, of straps 15, bent outwardly at right angles to the width of the strip 13, and then bent inwardly, as at 16, so that their free ends will lie closely against the front face of the strip 13 and keep it in loose contact with the window-frame.
17 are bent leaf springs attached to the keepers 15 and with their tips lying against the front or inner edges of the pivoted retaining-strip 13. They exert at all times sufficient pressure to force the strip 13 against the sash and hold it by friction securely in any desired position, and at the same time they are adapted to yield sufficiently to permit the sash to be moved up or down.
It will be seen that with my improved device just described no weights are required, and as all the parts are exposed they can be quickly repaired or replaced, thus involving a great saving over the present system of in side weights both with respect to the cost and the trouble of renewing the cords or chains attached to such weights and to the large expense involved in carrying in stock the many sizes and varieties required for different styles and. weights of windows.
I claim 1. The herein-described device for holding a sash at any point, the same consisting of a pivoted retaining-strip, a keeper secured to the window-frame and having loose contact with the outer side face of the retaining-strip, and a leaf-spring secured to the keeper and having bearing contact with the front face of the retaining-strip, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described device for holding a sash at any point, the same consisting of a retaining-strip pivoted at one end to the windew-frame, angular keepers secured to said frame and with one member standing in contactwith the front face of said strip, and bent springs whose centers are attached within said keepers and whose ends bear against the outer edge of said strip to keep its inner edge in frictional contact with said sash, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. STEVENS. Witnessesi W. T. MILLER, F. W. SEARs.
