'TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: F Be it known' thatI, WILLIAM W. JOHNSON, o f Harrison, Cumberland -county, State of Maine, have invented new and useful improvement-s in Road Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exaet .description of the same, reference being had to the drawings that accompany and for' m a part of these specications, in whichv Figure I is a view of the machine in perspective. Figure II, sectional view, showing the arrangement' of some of the minor parte. yFigure III, view of same parts as in Fig.' IL-but in different position. -Figu're IV, Side elevation, showing the axle A.
Figui-'e V, pif view of some of the small parts that attach' to the scraperboar`d. Figure VL New of the ,ml-apelboai-d, thrown over, so' as 't bringthe bottom 'side up, a suitable position l for taking the machine from place to plaee,' i I VLetter A, the axle; lletter H, soraperboard, (the rear i) lett'er C, front and bottom of the same; letters .E E; two `piceoeuponthe hoordI-Iwhioh-fhavszstots;letter D,piir#-rulming dn; the slots --EE;- lett`er '13, forked link, sustaining the pin D; letter F', spring, curved at i in such manner as to receive the pin D ahd hold it; j
letter G, levers to operate the forked link and pin D. I
The axle marked A on the drawing is bentl downward onkthe inside of the wheels at right angles, so as yto bring the scraper nearer the earth when it is placed on theaxle than it was on.the straight'. axle? This inakes thesornper work better in and out ofzilitehesn and .when it nnloa'ds it throws thesoraper 'up -elear from4 .the` earth. Also the forked link, marked-B on the drawings, which is attached to the lever a'ndto the frontpart of the scraper-board, marked C 'on the drnwings, instead of` being attaohed permanently t'o theboard, is inode to Yslide upnnd down bymeans of the-pieces E E, made of iron, with slots in them, placed far enough opal-L to let the end of the forked link work np and down-between them. I pass ff' boltthrough the endnof the forked link andv through the slots`in thepieces E E, so that in working the -scrapcrtherend of the forked link works vup and down through the-s`lots by the' bolt passing through them. The bolt marked D in the drwings extends through the pieces E E on one 'side farenough to bear agoinst the spring ]3.a ttaohed` to the scraperfboard at the lower end, and springs forward' from thebOn-rd at the top, so that when the forked klink slides to the nppIer` edge of the boardA the end ofthe bolt D presses the spring-back against the board, and near-the upper end the bolt slips into a cateh in the spring at z', whieh h olds it in that position. The pieces E E are from'six to eight in'cheslong, and allow' the Scraper-board to tip back nearer a horizontal position,- which `raises Mthe lower edge of the scraper from the'ground, so that it will move' along,' when loaded, without'scrapi'ng.
'. A. I claim providing the scraper-board, forexcavating and Inovingearthywhther such bonrdis worked upon lium'aight or-c'rookedaxles, W-itll'the lever G,`the, forkcd link B, the pin D, the slotted pieces E E, and springI", arranged and `nmbined gnbstantial'ly as Vdescribed and for the purpose set forth. i 1Sepmb e-'1,.-1 8oo.
